West Bengal Exit Polls: Mixed Signals for Ruling TMC

As the high-voltage West Bengal assembly elections draw to a close, five exit polls have presented a divided verdict. While four polls indicate a clear edge for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), only one predicts a comfortable return for the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC). The numbers, released on Thursday evening, have set the stage for a nail-biting counting day on May 2.

Exit Poll Breakdown

According to the aggregated 'poll of polls', the BJP is projected to win between 150 and 170 seats in the 294-member assembly, comfortably above the halfway mark of 148. The TMC is expected to secure 110-130 seats, while the Left-Congress alliance may manage just 10-15 seats. The lone exit poll favoring the TMC gives the ruling party 160-180 seats, with the BJP at 100-120.

The four pro-BJP polls include those by Axis My India, Today's Chanakya, and two other agencies. The only TMC-friendly poll was conducted by a lesser-known agency. Political analysts caution that exit polls have often been inaccurate in West Bengal, pointing to the 2021 assembly elections where most polls underestimated the TMC's strength.

Key Factors and Reactions

Campaign issues included unemployment, women's safety, and the implementation of central schemes. The BJP focused on corruption allegations against the TMC government, while Mamata Banerjee highlighted her government's welfare schemes and cultural identity. Both sides have expressed confidence in victory.

BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar said, "The exit polls reflect the people's desire for change. We will form the next government." TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh countered, "Exit polls are not final. We will win with a clear majority as per our internal assessment."

Counting of votes will take place on May 2, with the final results expected by evening. The outcome will determine whether Mamata Banerjee secures a third consecutive term or the BJP wrests control of the state for the first time.
