Bihar Chief Minister Post Set for BJP Takeover as JD(U) Leader Signals Major NDA Power Shift

In a significant political development, senior JD(U) leader and Bihar Parliamentary Affairs Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary declared on Sunday that the next chief minister of Bihar would be from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This statement indicates a major shift in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) power structure ahead of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's anticipated resignation.

Timing and Context of the Announcement

Choudhary's remarks came just hours before Kumar convened a crucial cabinet meeting scheduled for 11 am on Tuesday, April 14. This gathering is widely expected to be the final meeting of the current council of ministers. According to NDA sources, Kumar may step down after this meeting and submit his resignation to Governor Syed Ata Hasnain at Lok Bhavan.

The speculation surrounding Kumar's departure has intensified since he took oath as a Rajya Sabha member on April 10, fueling rumors about his potential transition to national politics. When questioned about the succession plan, Choudhary made it unequivocally clear that the decision would rest entirely with the BJP.

Choudhary's Detailed Explanation of the Process

"It is the BJP which has to decide the name of the next CM. The BJP has its own process to take a decision. After the recommendation from the BJP, the NDA legislative party will meet and 'elect' the leader. The person, whom all legislators of the NDA will unanimously elect as the leader, would be the next CM," Choudhary stated.

Emphasizing the BJP's central role in this transition, the minister further elaborated, "The BJP will first elect its leader. Then, the NDA legislative party will endorse that very name." This clarification underscores a structured handover process that prioritizes the BJP's internal mechanisms.

Political Implications and BJP's Enthusiasm

Choudhary's statement has energized the BJP camp, which now perceives a strong possibility of securing the chief minister's post in Bihar. This is particularly significant as Bihar remains one of the few Hindi heartland states where the BJP has not held the top position, despite being part of the ruling alliance for nearly two decades.

The speculation over Kumar's successor has intensified, with several names circulating as potential candidates. Among the frontrunners are:

  • Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai
  • Bihar Industries Minister Dilip Kumar Jaiswal
  • Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary

Additionally, Digha MLA Sanjeev Chaurasia is being discussed as a serious contender, while Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar is viewed as a possible dark horse in the race.

Caste Dynamics and Potential Accommodations

Caste equations are expected to play a pivotal role in the final decision. Extremely backward classes constitute 36.01% of Bihar's population, while backward classes make up 27.12%. Leaders from both categories are in contention, with some considered close to the central leadership.

Sources indicate that while the BJP is poised to take the chief minister's post, the JD(U) may be accommodated with two deputy chief minister positions. Nishant Kumar, who recently entered active politics, is being speculated as a possible choice for one of these posts.

Reactions and Symbolic Gestures

Reacting to these developments, Purnia MP Pappu Yadav commented, "Now the Bihar government will run through 'remote control' from Delhi. The real decisions will be taken in Delhi. If Nitish Kumar steps down from the post, someone from the JD(U) itself should be made the CM."

Amid this political churn, a symbolic "havan" was held at Arya Samaj Mandir in Ghorasahan, East Champaran, where BJP workers prayed for Samrat Choudhary to become the next chief minister, highlighting the grassroots enthusiasm surrounding the potential change.

This unfolding scenario marks a historic moment in Bihar's political landscape, with the BJP poised to assume the chief ministerial role after years of alliance politics, signaling a recalibration of power within the NDA framework.
