In a major push for road safety, the Bihar transport department has launched a stringent statewide crackdown on traffic violators, resulting in the suspension of thousands of driving licences. This decisive action follows coordinated recommendations from the transport department, Bihar Police, and traffic police authorities.
Scale of the Enforcement Drive
The department has taken severe punitive measures against vehicle drivers flouting rules. Official data reveals that driving licences of 4,488 vehicle drivers were suspended, while the licences of 497 others were cancelled outright. Transport Secretary Raj Kumar emphasized the seriousness of the campaign, stating that if drivers violate rules even after suspension, their licences will face cancellation.
He clarified that in cases of cancellation, offenders must reapply for a fresh licence and undergo the entire driving test process again. "This exercise will continue regularly," Kumar asserted. "Cases like driving at high speed, careless driving, carrying loads beyond capacity, and repeated violation of rules are being taken seriously. Action is being taken to suspend or cancel driving licences against such drivers."
Focus on Repeat Offenders and Key Violations
The transport secretary issued a stern warning to habitual offenders, cautioning that their licences could be permanently cancelled. He appealed to all drivers to adhere to regulations to ensure their own safety and that of others on the road.
According to the department's report, the maximum actions were taken for a range of serious infractions. The major offences identified include:
- Repeatedly violating road safety rules
- Overspeeding and rash driving
- Jumping red lights
- Overloading vehicles beyond capacity
- Driving without helmets or seat belts
- Wrong-side driving
Technology and Joint Campaigns Boost Vigilance
To achieve effective control over road accidents, the department is leveraging technology. Violators are being systematically identified through Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras installed across key routes. This tech-enabled surveillance ensures constant monitoring and evidence-based prosecution.
Furthermore, intensive vehicle-checking campaigns are being conducted jointly by teams from the police and the transport department. This coordinated effort aims to create a sustained deterrent presence on the roads.
This crackdown aligns with earlier directives from Transport Minister Shravan Kumar, who ordered strict action against those carelessly parking or abandoning four-wheeled vehicles on roadsides. The minister had authorized officials to impose penalties including vehicle seizure, licence suspension, and heavy fines.
The state's comprehensive approach signals a no-tolerance policy towards traffic indiscipline, aiming to foster a culture of compliance and significantly reduce accidents on Bihar's roads.
