In a dramatic turn of events ahead of Monday's Rajya Sabha elections, the opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress have jointly accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of engaging in horse-trading attempts to sway votes. The allegations have sparked a heated political debate in Odisha, with both sides trading barbs and internal dissent emerging within the Congress party.
BJD President Naveen Patnaik Leads the Charge
BJD president and former chief minister Naveen Patnaik publicly stated outside the assembly that the BJP and its three Rajya Sabha candidates are actively attempting to horse-trade, which he labeled as a serious offence. Patnaik first raised these concerns on March 11, and the issue has since escalated. BJD MLA Byomakesh Ray further intensified the accusations by alleging that Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi is personally contacting MLAs to influence their votes. Ray warned that any legislator voting against the party line would face severe backlash from their constituents, highlighting the high stakes involved.
BJP Strongly Denies Allegations and Counters Claims

Congress Internal Dissent Over Alliance with BJD
Amid the political turmoil, Congress MLA Sofia Firdous publicly questioned her party's decision to align with the BJD in backing a common independent candidate, Datteswar Hota. Firdous expressed displeasure, noting that the BJD has largely supported the BJP in Parliament and elsewhere, making the alliance questionable. She emphasized that there was no consultation with MLAs who will cast votes in the election, leaving her voting preference unclear and exposing internal rifts within the Congress. However, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhakta Charan Das clarified that the decision to back Hota was made under the direction of the party high command after internal discussions, and MLAs have been instructed to ensure the candidate's success.
