BJP Reaches Out to AIADMK for Constituency Swap as Internal Dissent Grows Over Tamil Nadu Poll Allocation
In a significant political development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has formally approached its ally, the AIADMK, seeking a swap of five key constituencies to accommodate prominent leaders, including state president K Annamalai. This move comes amid escalating unease within the BJP ranks over the current seat-sharing arrangement for the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections, with protests erupting in several districts.
Key Leaders and Constituency Demands
According to senior BJP sources, the party has requested specific constituencies for its high-profile candidates. K T Raghavan is being sought for Chengalpattu, while writer M Venkatesan is proposed for the Egmore seat. Additionally, K Vasantha Rajan is being considered for Kinathukadavu in Coimbatore district, a constituency currently allotted to AIADMK MLA S Damodharan.
Discussions are actively underway to secure a suitable constituency for BJP state chief K Annamalai, with potential locations including Coimbatore, Karur, or other regions. Annamalai was earlier expected to contest from Singanallur or Kavundampalayam in Coimbatore, or Aravakurichi in Karur, but none of these were allocated to the BJP in the initial agreement.
Protests and Internal Criticism
The seat allocation has sparked visible discontent, with protests reported in T Nagar, Coimbatore, and Palani, where party cadres have openly questioned the choice of constituencies. Internally, BJP circles have criticized the distribution, noting that several DMK strongholds have been assigned to the party, forcing its candidates to face as many as 13 DMK ministers, including prominent figures like E V Velu and Anitha Radhakrishnan.
"Talks are ongoing, and we may know by Sunday how many seats will be swapped," revealed a state-level BJP functionary, highlighting the fluid nature of the negotiations.
District-Wise Allocation Concerns
The distribution has also raised eyebrows over its district-wise imbalance. For instance, BJP has been allotted three seats in Pudukkottai district, while in Coimbatore, where the party is perceived to have stronger electoral prospects, it has secured only one. The allocation of Aranthangi and Gandarvakottai (reserved) constituencies in Pudukkottai came as a surprise, despite expectations following Union Home Minister Amit Shah's visit in January.
On Saturday evening, a section of AIADMK functionaries from Aranthangi gathered outside former Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami's residence in Chennai to protest, arguing that their party has a better chance of winning in these constituencies based on past victories in 2011 and 2016.
AIADMK's Internal Challenges
The unease is not confined to the BJP alone. Sources within the AIADMK indicate that there have been internal representations seeking seat swaps with the BJP. A proposal has been conveyed through Viralimalai MLA and former minister C Vijayabaskar, suggesting a mutual interest in reevaluating the allocation.
Furthermore, AIADMK is yet to announce its candidate for the Alangudi constituency due to a stalemate over selecting a nominee that aligns with local community equations, adding another layer of complexity to the alliance's preparations.
Broader Implications
This seat-swap initiative underscores the strategic recalibrations within the BJP-AIADMK alliance as they gear up for a competitive electoral battle in Tamil Nadu. The outcome of these negotiations could significantly impact the alliance's cohesion and electoral performance, with both parties navigating internal dissent and external pressures.
