BJP Unveils First Candidate List for West Bengal Assembly Elections

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has released its initial roster of 144 candidates for the upcoming West Bengal assembly elections, setting the stage for a high-stakes political battle. The list, finalized on Monday, features prominent names including Suvendu Adhikari, who will contest from two key constituencies, directly challenging Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Key Contenders and Strategic Moves

Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in the assembly, has been fielded from both Bhowanipore and Nandigram. Bhowanipore is Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's home turf, where she has served as MLA since 2011, winning three consecutive terms. In contrast, Nandigram was the site of Adhikari's narrow victory over Banerjee in the 2021 assembly polls by 1,956 votes, a result currently under challenge in the high court.

Adhikari has publicly expressed his intent to mount a robust challenge against Banerjee in Bhowanipore over recent months. Amit Malviya, co-in-charge of the Bengal BJP, emphasized the significance of this dual candidacy in a social media post, stating it represents a "fight to the finish" between the two political heavyweights.

Rehabilitation and Comeback Stories

Dilip Ghosh, a veteran BJP leader, has been nominated from Kharagpur Sadar, a constituency he previously represented from 2016 to 2019. Ghosh had faced political sidelining but began his rehabilitation following the appointment of Samik Bhattacharya as state BJP chief last year. His discontent over contesting from the Bardhaman-Durgapur Lok Sabha seat in 2024, where he suffered defeat, was well-known. Ghosh had earlier indicated his willingness to re-enter the fray if fielded in Kharagpur Sadar, and his presence at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rally at Brigade Parade Ground signaled his political resurgence.

The current MLA for Kharagpur Sadar is actor Hiran, adding an element of celebrity rivalry to the contest.

New Entrants and Diverse Candidates

Soumitra Chattopadhyay, a seventh-generation descendant of renowned litterateur Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, will contest on the BJP ticket from Naihati, the birthplace of the creator of Vande Mataram. Chattopadhyay, a former employee of the state labour department, joined the party just a month ago, highlighting the BJP's outreach to individuals with cultural and historical significance.

Other notable candidates include:

  • Swapan Dasgupta, a journalist-turned-politician and Padma Bhushan awardee, contesting from Rashbehari in Kolkata.
  • Sajal Ghosh, a KMC councillor, fielded from Baranagar.
  • Rudranil Ghosh, an actor, contesting from Shibpur.

Composition of the Candidate List

The first list retains 41 sitting MLAs, including Shankar Ghosh, the BJP's assembly chief whip, who will contest from Siliguri. It also features three former MLAs: Jitendra Tiwari (Pandabeswar), Samarendranath Ghosh (Karimpur), and Saikat Panja (Manteswar). A senior BJP functionary noted that the party aims to project a "synergy of old and new faces," balancing experience with fresh perspectives.

The list demonstrates diversity across various dimensions:

  • Gender Representation: Includes 11 women candidates, such as Agnimitra Paul (Asansol South), Malati Rava Roy (Tufanganj), and Chandana Bauri (Saltora).
  • Professional Backgrounds: Comprises 23 teachers, 6 advocates, 5 doctors, and 3 retired soldiers, reflecting a broad societal base.
  • Community and Spiritual Figures: Features Rajesh Mahato, former Kurmi Samaj state president, fielded in Gopiballavpur, who advocates for Kurmali language inclusion in the Constitution's Eighth Schedule and ST status for the community. Additionally, three spiritual personalities—Utpal Maharaj (Kaliaganj), Swami Mangalananda Puri (Uluberia South), and Nikhil Banerjee (Hansan)—are on the list.

Electoral Context and Implications

This candidate announcement comes amid intense political rivalry in West Bengal, with the BJP seeking to strengthen its foothold after making significant gains in recent years. The decision to field Adhikari from both Bhowanipore and Nandigram is seen as a strategic move to maximize pressure on Chief Minister Banerjee, potentially splitting her focus and resources.

The inclusion of figures like Dilip Ghosh and Soumitra Chattopadhyay underscores the party's efforts to consolidate support among traditional voters while attracting new demographics. As the election campaign heats up, these candidates will play crucial roles in shaping the political narrative and voter sentiment across the state.

The BJP's first list sets a competitive tone for the assembly elections, promising a closely watched and fiercely contested electoral battle in West Bengal.
