BJP Scrambles to Replace Candidate in Vadodara Ward 1 as Nomination Deadline Looms
In a dramatic last-minute development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was compelled to change its candidate for the Scheduled Tribe (ST) seat in Ward 1 of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) on Saturday. The switch occurred mere hours before the nomination deadline expired, following the revelation that the party's initially declared nominee was not registered in the civic electoral roll.
Initial Nominee's Registration Issue Sparks Urgent Replacement
The party had originally fielded Raag Machhar, the son of senior BJP member Lalit Machhar. Lalit Machhar has a long-standing association with the BJP and operates a hospital in Nizampura. While Raag Machhar's name was present in the Assembly electoral rolls after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), it was conspicuously absent from the voters' list for the upcoming municipal polls.
According to Machhar, the family had transferred their voter registration from Fatepura in Dahod to Vadodara during the SIR process. However, they may have missed the critical deadline for inclusion in the municipal electoral roll, creating a significant procedural hurdle for his candidacy.
Last-Minute Candidate Swap Ensures Compliance
With time rapidly running out, the BJP swiftly moved to replace Machhar with Bhursing Rathwa. Rathwa's documentation was verified and found to be in perfect order, and crucially, he was listed as a valid voter for the civic elections. This substitution allowed the party to meet the nomination requirements just under the wire, averting a potential disqualification in the contested ward.
The incident highlights the intense scrutiny and procedural precision required in electoral processes, especially in high-stakes municipal elections. It also underscores the challenges parties face in ensuring their candidates fulfill all legal and administrative criteria, particularly when dealing with tight deadlines and complex voter registration systems.
