BJP Spokesperson Condemns Telangana Chief Minister's Remarks on Democracy and Delimitation
In a sharp rebuke, BJP Telangana spokesperson Rani Rudrama on Monday launched a scathing attack against Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, accusing him of viewing democracy through the lens of a real estate business. She characterized his approach to national governance as akin to a profit-and-loss calculation, labeling this perspective as a dangerous mindset that undermines constitutional principles.
Constitutional Rights Versus Economic Metrics
Addressing a press conference in Hyderabad, Rudrama emphasized that fundamental rights are not contingent upon income levels, and parliamentary seats cannot be allocated based on Gross Domestic Product figures. She asserted that, as per the Indian Constitution, every citizen holds an equal vote regardless of financial status, whether they are millionaires or living in poverty.
Her comments were a direct response to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy's recent proposal suggesting that the delimitation of parliamentary constituencies should be tied to Gross State Domestic Product. Rudrama argued that such a framework would distort democratic representation and marginalize economically disadvantaged regions.
Allegations of Resource Diversion and Regional Neglect
The BJP spokesperson further claimed that there is growing public concern over the diversion of Telangana's resources to fulfill other political agendas. She raised critical questions about the potential exclusion of regions like Adilabad, Mulugu, and Bhupalpally from adequate representation, and whether historically overlooked areas such as Hyderabad's Old City would continue to be ignored.
"These are not merely rhetorical questions; they demand concrete answers from the state government," Rudrama stated, highlighting the need for transparency in governance.
Accusations of Obstructing Women's Reservation
Rudrama alleged that the introduction of what she termed "hybrid formulas" and novel arguments is a deliberate strategy to delay or prevent the implementation of the women's reservation bill. She accused the Congress party of orchestrating these tactics to block opportunities for women in political representation.
"If delimitation proceeds, the number of Lok Sabha seats could potentially increase from 543 to 816, creating a significant opportunity to allocate 272 seats exclusively to women," she explained. "However, even if such legislation is introduced by the central government in Parliament, the Congress party is likely to obstruct it, preventing a vote and thereby denying women their rightful representation."
Political Agenda and Public Backlash
The BJP spokesperson concluded by alleging that Chief Minister Revanth Reddy is being used as a front to advance a broader political agenda under the pretext of representing south Indian interests. She warned that such actions, which she claims undermine the aspirations of women across the nation, will not go unnoticed by the public.
"People are observant, and they will respond decisively to any attempts that compromise the democratic rights and representation of women," Rudrama asserted, signaling potential political repercussions for the ruling party.
