BJP Delegation Assesses Sijimali Situation After Violent Clash Over Mining Road

A high-level delegation from the Bharatiya Janata Party, led by Nabarangpur Member of Parliament Balabhadra Majhi, conducted a visit to the Sijimali area in Rayagada district on Wednesday. This visit followed a violent incident on April 7 where approximately 70 local residents were injured during clashes with police forces. The confrontation erupted amid ongoing protests by tribal communities against the construction of a road intended to service a proposed bauxite mining project.

Assurances Given Amidst Allegations of Injustice

During the engagement with affected residents, the BJP delegation provided assurances that their grievances would be thoroughly addressed. In an official statement, the party clarified that the mining lease for the Sijimali area, located under the Kashipur block, was originally granted in 2023 during the tenure of the previous Biju Janata Dal government. The BJP has raised serious concerns regarding several potential legal irregularities in the lease approval process.

The protesting agitators, who strongly oppose the road construction, formally submitted a detailed memorandum outlining their complaints to the visiting delegation. The BJP criticized what it described as "conflicting statements" and "misleading remarks" from various political factions, which it claims have sown fear and confusion among the local population.

Residents Allege Administrative Harassment

Local residents presented counter-allegations, claiming that the district administration has been engaged in a campaign of harassment concerning the mining issue. These allegations include:

  • The filing of false criminal cases against protesters.
  • The detention of residents, including reports of pregnant women and children being taken into custody.
  • Alleged late-night police operations in the Kashipur area targeting individuals linked to the protests.

MP Balabhadra Majhi directly addressed these serious claims, stating, "No injustice will be done. We have held detailed discussions with the local residents as well as police, administration and the district collector." He emphasized that the alleged injustices and atrocities faced by Sijimali residents in recent days would be resolved.

Delegation's Mandate and Next Steps

The BJP delegation's visit was conducted under the direct instructions of Odisha State BJP President Manmohan Samal, with the primary objective of assessing the law-and-order situation in the volatile Sijimali region. The tribal communities of Rayagada village have been steadfast in their opposition to the road, which is directly linked to a bauxite mining block operated by the Vedanta Group.

Majhi confirmed that the delegation's findings from their ground assessment and discussions with locals would be formally presented to Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and State Party President Samal. This step is intended to ensure the state's top leadership is fully apprised of the on-ground realities and the urgent need for a political and administrative resolution to the escalating conflict.
