BJP Functionary Demands Substantial Compensation for Farmers After Devastating Canal Breach in Koppal
In a significant development highlighting agricultural distress, BJP functionary Basavaraj Kyavater has issued a strong demand for compensation amounting to Rs 1 lakh per acre for farmers whose lands were inundated following a major canal breach near the villages of Bandiharalapur and Basapur in Koppal taluk. The incident, which occurred approximately a week ago, has resulted in extensive damage to paddy crops across more than 90 acres of farmland.
Allegations of Official Negligence and Delayed Response
In a detailed statement released on Sunday, Kyavater leveled serious accusations against local officials and representatives of the ruling party, claiming that repeated pleas from farmers for essential canal maintenance were systematically ignored. He emphasized that timely intervention and repairs could have entirely prevented this catastrophic breach, which has now left numerous farming families in a precarious financial situation.
Kyavater stated, "The negligence displayed by the authorities is unacceptable. Farmers in this region have been cultivating paddy with limited water resources, often struggling due to inadequate irrigation facilities for a second crop. This breach has compounded their hardships."
Urgent Calls for Survey and Compensation Disbursement
Furthermore, Kyavater highlighted significant delays in the official assessment of the affected areas. He alleged that officials from the revenue and irrigation departments have yet to complete a thorough and proper survey of the damage. This delay is hindering the process of compensation distribution, leaving farmers without immediate relief.
He has urgently appealed to the authorities to:
- Conduct an immediate and comprehensive survey of all inundated farmlands.
- Expedite the release of the demanded compensation of Rs 1 lakh per acre to the affected farmers without further bureaucratic delays.
- Initiate urgent repairs on the breached canal to prevent further agricultural and water supply issues.
Broader Implications for Water Supply in the Region
Beyond the immediate agricultural damage, Kyavater warned of potential long-term consequences. He pointed out that this canal breach could severely impact drinking water supply in parts of Koppal and neighboring Raichur districts, especially during the upcoming summer months when water scarcity typically peaks.
This incident underscores critical issues in rural infrastructure maintenance and the urgent need for responsive governance to support the agricultural community, which forms the backbone of the region's economy.
