BJP Gets 27 Seats in Tamil Nadu, Limited in Key Cities

BJP Secures 27 Constituencies in Tamil Nadu Amid Strategic Seat Restrictions

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been allocated a total of 27 constituencies for the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections, according to the finalized seat-sharing list. However, in a significant development, the AIADMK has limited the saffron ally to just one seat each in the major urban centers of Coimbatore and Chennai, despite the BJP's persistent demands for a larger share in these key regions.

Notable Omissions and Strategic Allocations

Tirunelveli constituency, where BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran contested in the previous election, has not been allotted to the party this time. Instead, Sattur, which was widely touted as a probable seat for the BJP leader, has been assigned. Radhapuram remains the only seat in Nainar's home district, but he has never contested there, and it is currently held by DMK MLA and assembly Speaker M Appavu.

Interestingly, with the exception of Tiruchendur—one of the six sacred abodes of Lord Muruga—none of the constituencies with places of significant religious importance have been allotted to the BJP. Furthermore, only two of the four constituencies won by the BJP in the 2021 assembly polls have been reallocated to the party this election cycle.

Coimbatore District: A Battleground of Ambitions

BJP sources indicate that the party was eyeing the Singanallur and Kavundampalayam seats in Coimbatore district, with an apparent bid to field former state president K Annamalai. AIADMK had offered Palladam, but Annamalai expressed reluctance, as it was the constituency where he polled the least votes during the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

In Tirupur South, there is a likelihood of Kadeswara Thangaraj, son of Hindu Munani president Kadeswara Subramaniam, being fielded. For the Avinashi reserved constituency, Union minister L Murugan is being considered as a potential candidate. Meanwhile, in Modakuruchi, a relative of sitting BJP MLA C Saraswathi is being touted as the probable nominee.

Coimbatore South, where BJP women's wing president Vanathi Srinivasan defeated MNM president Kamal Haasan in 2021, has been held back by AIADMK this time. Instead, Vanathi is likely to be fielded from Coimbatore North. AIADMK sources reveal that former minister S P Velumani's close aide, Amman Arjunan, will be fielded in Coimbatore South.

Chennai: A Single Seat Concession

In Chennai, the BJP has been restricted to a single seat—Mylapore, where former Telangana governor Tamilisai Soundararajan is set to contest. The BJP had actively sought additional urban seats, including Velachery, T Nagar, Harbour, Virugambakkam, and Alandur, expecting to secure at least three constituencies in the capital city. However, these efforts failed to materialize.

This limitation means that prominent BJP functionaries such as Vinoj P Selvam and S J Suryah, who have been actively working in these segments, will now have to explore other seats or potentially stay out of the polls altogether.

Kanniyakumari: A Four-Seat Stronghold

The BJP will contest four seats in the Kanniyakumari district: Nagercoil, Colachel, Vilavancode, and Padmanabhapuram. Of these, the party is likely to face direct competition from the Congress in Colachel and Vilavancode, both of which are considered strongholds for the BJP in the region.

This strategic seat allocation underscores the complex dynamics of alliance politics in Tamil Nadu, with the BJP navigating both opportunities and constraints as it prepares for the electoral battle ahead.
