BJP Kerala Core Committee Projects NDA Wins in Assembly Election, Addresses George Controversy
In a significant political development from Thiruvananthapuram, the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) core committee meeting in Kerala has expressed strong optimism regarding the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) performance in the recent assembly election held on April 9. The committee projected that the NDA is poised to secure victories in at least four constituencies, with the potential for this number to surge into double digits due to intense triangular contests unfolding across approximately 35 constituencies.
Confidence in Key Constituencies and Ground-Level Assessments
Party leaders articulated specific confidence in winning the Nemom and Kazhakkoottam seats, highlighting these as key battlegrounds where the BJP's strategy is expected to yield positive results. To bolster these projections, the BJP is conducting a comprehensive booth-level assessment, which is anticipated to be finalized by the end of April. Preliminary data compilation at the grassroots level is scheduled for completion by April 23, providing a clearer picture of the party's electoral standing.
Addressing the P C George and Deepika Controversy
The core committee also delved into the recent public criticism levied by BJP leader and former MLA P C George, along with his son Shone George, against certain clergymen of the Catholic Church and its affiliated newspaper, Deepika. The committee concluded that there was no inherent wrongdoing in the Georges' reactions, framing them as legitimate political responses to what they perceive as interference aimed at undermining BJP candidates.
The committee emphasized that the outbursts were not directed at the Church or the broader community but were specifically targeted at political interventions by some clergymen, whom they accused of harboring hidden motives to defeat BJP nominees. It was resolved that criticism against those actively working against the BJP should be viewed as a political reaction, albeit one that requires careful wording to maintain decorum and avoid unnecessary escalation.
Senior Leadership Support and Broader Political Context
Senior functionaries within the party have extended their full support to the criticism made by Shone George against the Deepika newspaper, reinforcing the party's stance on the issue. Earlier, K S Radhakrishnan, the party's state vice-president, had articulated a nuanced position, asserting that while churches and clergy possess the right to engage in political activities, they should not expect immunity from criticism simply by virtue of wearing 'sacred clothing'. This statement underscores the BJP's commitment to political accountability and free discourse, even when it involves religious figures.
The core committee's discussions reflect a strategic blend of electoral confidence and a firm stance on political criticism, positioning the BJP to navigate Kerala's complex political landscape with a clear and assertive approach.
