BJP MLA's Supporters Allegedly Assault Education Director in Dehradun Office Dispute

In a shocking incident that has sent ripples through the administrative corridors of Uttarakhand, Basic Education Director Ajay Kumar Naudiyal was allegedly assaulted by supporters of BJP MLA Umesh Sharma Kau inside his own office in Dehradun on Saturday afternoon. The violent altercation erupted following a heated dispute over the renaming of Asthal Primary School, highlighting escalating tensions between political representatives and government officials.

Sequence of Events: From Verbal Abuse to Physical Assault

According to the detailed complaint filed by Director Naudiyal, MLA Kau arrived at the education directorate office around 12:10 pm accompanied by 10–12 individuals without any prior appointment or notification. Naudiyal alleged that the MLA immediately began verbally abusing office staff and demanded they vacate the premises. Once the director was isolated in his office, the situation deteriorated rapidly.

"They took away my phone, threatened me physically, shoved me around, and ordered me to resolve the school renaming issue immediately," Naudiyal stated in his official complaint. The director emphasized that he had previously informed two visitors that the matter exceeded his directorate's authority and had already been referred to higher government levels for consideration.

Violence Escalates: Property Damage and Injuries

The situation turned increasingly violent as staff members alerted local police authorities. According to Naudiyal's account, once the office door was opened, the group proceeded to assault both him and intervening staff members, mistreated female employees, damaged office property extensively, tore important files, and issued explicit threats before departing the premises. The director suffered visible injuries to his face and forehead, requiring medical attention at Coronation District Hospital where he received multiple stitches.

"They warned me and my staff of further harm if we didn't comply with their demands," Naudiyal added, underscoring the climate of intimidation that permeated the incident.

Legal Action and Investigation Underway

Raipur police station sub-inspector Sanjay Rawat confirmed that a formal case has been registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including:

  • Section 121A: Voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from duty
  • Section 191(2): Rioting
  • Section 324(3): Mischief
  • Section 351(3): Criminal intimidation
  • Section 352: Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace

Police authorities have initiated an investigation, utilizing CCTV footage from the premises and eyewitness accounts to identify all individuals involved in the alleged assault. The forensic examination of the crime scene and medical documentation of injuries are proceeding as part of the standard investigative protocol.

MLA's Defense and Political Fallout

MLA Umesh Sharma Kau categorically denied all allegations, presenting an alternative narrative of events. "I had gone to the office on behalf of a family that had donated land for the school construction and wanted it named after an elder family member," Kau explained. "They had been pursuing this matter for months and recently approached me for assistance. I merely wrote to the directorate on their behalf and accompanied them for a meeting with officials."

Kau claimed that when staff members gathered in the office, he attempted to de-escalate the situation as tensions rose. "It was actually staff members who resorted to violence and damaged office furniture. The complete truth will emerge during the proper investigation," he asserted.

Political Condemnation and Institutional Response

The incident has triggered strong reactions across the political spectrum. The BJP state leadership condemned the episode as "unfortunate and unacceptable" while promising appropriate internal action. State BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP Mahendra Bhatt emphasized, "Our party does not support any form of lawlessness or violence. While public issues can certainly be raised through proper channels, no one can be permitted to violate established laws."

Bhatt confirmed the party would seek a detailed explanation from the MLA while advocating for strict legal action against anyone found guilty. He also appealed to education department staff to exercise restraint to ensure ongoing board examinations remain unaffected by the controversy.

Congress leader Harish Rawat echoed similar sentiments, stating, "The party affiliation of the MLA is irrelevant in this context. All public representatives must maintain basic decorum and respect for institutional processes. Violence against government employees has absolutely no place in a functioning democracy where proper grievance redressal mechanisms exist."

Employee Protest and Administrative Implications

In the aftermath of the incident, directorate employees organized a protest demonstration outside the education directorate, voicing their collective outrage over the lack of safety and security for government officials performing their duties. The protesting employees announced a boycott of all board examination-related responsibilities until adequate security measures and institutional safeguards are implemented.

This development raises serious concerns about potential disruptions to ongoing educational assessments and administrative functions within the state's education department. The incident has sparked broader conversations about the need for enhanced security protocols in government offices and clearer guidelines for interactions between elected representatives and administrative officials.

The case continues to develop as police investigations progress and political parties navigate the fallout from this unprecedented confrontation between legislative and executive branches of government.
