Bengaluru: The Bharatiya Janata Party's decision to nominate one of its own members to fill the Rajya Sabha seat vacated by former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda is widely perceived as the final chapter in the political career of the 93-year-old Janata Dal (Secular) patriarch, who has been active in politics for over six decades. However, sources close to the family indicate that Deve Gowda has no intention of retiring from active politics.
Deve Gowda's Political Journey
Deve Gowda's political journey began in 1962 when he was elected as an independent MLA from the Holenarasipura constituency in Karnataka's Hassan district. Since then, barring a brief four-year period outside the legislature or Parliament, he has held public office continuously. He served eight terms as an MLA, six as an MP, and two terms in the Rajya Sabha.
Party Functionary's Statement
A JD(S) functionary stated, "Deve Gowda will tour the state to strengthen the party ahead of the upcoming elections." This indicates that despite the setback, the veteran leader remains committed to his party's cause.
BJP's Position
While the JD(S) is reportedly disappointed that Deve Gowda was not considered by the National Democratic Alliance for another term, state BJP president B.Y. Vijayendra expressed that the saffron party holds "immense respect" for the former prime minister but needed to make a politically sound decision. "There was never any discussion at the state level about sending him to the Rajya Sabha. An opportunity has been given to a suitable candidate and a hardworking party worker," Vijayendra said.
Future of Alliance
The BJP's move also signals that the party may contest future elections independently. The alliance with the JD(S) is now described as a wait-and-watch proposition until the 2028 assembly elections.
