BJP Leaders Criticize Karnataka Budget for Neglecting Coastal Development
BJP Slams Karnataka Budget Over Coastal Neglect

BJP Leaders in Mangaluru Lambast Karnataka Budget for Coastal Neglect

Prominent BJP figures in Mangaluru, including former energy minister V Sunil Kumar, along with several MLAs and MLCs, have launched a scathing critique of the state Budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. They argue that the financial plan fails to address the pressing needs of the coastal region, highlighting a perceived lack of targeted support for development initiatives.

Key Criticisms from BJP and CPI(M)

BJP MLA Sunil Kumar expressed strong disappointment, stating that the Budget does not include a single provision specifically aimed at supporting coastal development. He pointed to the long-pending demand for a government medical college in the region, which remains unfulfilled, and noted that no funds have been reserved for the Paschima Vahini river diversion projects. These projects are considered crucial for the coastal belt's infrastructure and water management.

Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath echoed these sentiments, asserting that the coastal region has been completely neglected in the Budget allocations. Adding to the criticism, Muneer Katipalla, secretary of the CPI(M) Dakshina Kannada district committee, voiced significant disappointment over the lack of announcements to strengthen the healthcare sector and government hospitals in Dakshina Kannada.

Congress Defense and Business Concerns

On the other hand, Congress leader Manjunath Bhandary offered a contrasting perspective, describing the Budget as a "development document" with foresight that brings new energy to the coastal economy and education sector. He emphasized that it goes beyond mere numbers to provide strategic vision.

From the business community, PB Ahmed Mudassar, president of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), welcomed certain aspects of the Budget, such as the renewed focus on the fisheries sector. This includes increased subsidy support for fishermen's kits, the establishment of a Centre of Excellence at Mangalore Fisheries College, and the expansion of Matsya Darshinis across key districts.

However, Mudassar noted that the Budget falls short of the targeted support KCCI sought in its pre-Budget memorandum. Key unmet demands include incentives for Mangaluru Port modernisation, coastal highway expansion, and horticulture processing units. He also highlighted that GST revenue shortfalls have impacted local trade, and MSME concerns—such as the lack of dedicated credit guarantees, export subsidies, and power tariff relief to counter rising operational costs—were not adequately addressed.

Quotes from Leaders

Congress leader Manjunath Bhandary: "Fishing is a major economic source for the district, and the establishment of a modern 'Centre of Excellence' here is welcome. This will provide fishermen with support through modern technology. The announcement of modern transport facilities like 'seaplanes' and 'heli-taxis' to boost coastal tourism will help position Mangalore as a global tourist destination."

BJP MLA Sunil Kumar: "The government gave priority to urban development initiatives in Bengaluru. The Budget did not give priority beyond the state capital despite the government's claims of promoting a 'Beyond Bengaluru' development model. A separate industrial cluster for the coastal districts, development of the tourism sector, and promotion of IT investments were not addressed in the state budget."
