Hyderabad: BJP Telangana chief N Ramchander Rao has strongly criticised the Revanth Reddy-led Congress government for what he termed a “non-serious attitude” towards irrigation projects in the Godavari basin. In a letter addressed to the chief minister, Rao pointed out that delays in project execution are preventing Telangana from fully utilising its allocated share of water, which is estimated at 968 tmcft.
Concerns Over Dam Safety and Repairs
Rao highlighted that the state government has not yet acted on reports from the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) regarding damage to the barrages of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project, specifically at Medigadda, Annaram, and Sundilla. These structures remain unrepaired despite the NDSA issuing recommendations for repairs as early as November 2023. The lack of prompt action, according to Rao, raises serious safety and operational concerns.
Delays in Other Key Projects
In addition to the Kaleshwaram project, Rao pointed to delays in the Sita Rama Lift Irrigation Project in Khammam district and the Sammakka-Sarakka Sagar project in Mulugu district. He argued that these delays are depriving the state of significant water resources, thereby affecting agricultural output and rural livelihoods.
Godavari-Cauvery Interlinking Project
Rao also expressed concerns regarding the state government’s reported discussions on potential modifications to the alignment and source location of the proposed Godavari-Cauvery River interlinking project, which is planned to originate from Icchampalli. He contended that any changes to the project’s design could adversely impact Telangana’s interests and impede the optimal utilisation of the state’s allocated Godavari water resources.
He urged the government to expedite the implementation of these projects to ensure the optimal use of available water, emphasising that timely execution is critical for the state’s agricultural and economic development.
