The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Thiruvananthapuram has launched a sharp accusation against the state's Left Democratic Front (LDF) government, alleging deliberate attempts to stall the development of the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. This delay, the party warns, could place the airport's operational licence in serious jeopardy.
Allegations of Deliberate Obstruction
At a press conference held on Tuesday at the party's district office, BJP district president Karamana Jayan presented the allegations. He stated that the state government is intentionally obstructing crucial development work required to bring the airport up to international standards. The core issue revolves around a land transfer of approximately 18 acres.
Jayan revealed that while the authorities possess nearly all the required land, a critical parcel of around 2 acres remains untransferred by the state government. This missing piece is halting the entire development plan, which includes essential upgrades to facilities.
The Looming Licence Threat and Adani's Stance
The BJP leader issued a stark warning regarding the potential consequences of this delay. He claimed that if the necessary land is not handed over within the next two years, the airport faces the real threat of losing its operational licence. This is because the upgrades are mandated to meet international aviation norms.
Addressing the financial aspect, Jayan clarified that Adani Group, the private company that currently manages the airport, has already communicated in writing its willingness to provide payment for the required land. This, according to him, removes any financial pretext for the state's inaction.
Calling Out Government "Indifference"
Jayan expressed strong criticism of the state government's approach, labelling its continued delay as unacceptable and a sign of "indifference" towards the development of the state capital's vital infrastructure. He argued that the government's stance is not just slowing progress but actively harming the city's and state's connectivity and economic prospects.
The press briefing has escalated the political tussle over the airport's development, which has been a contentious issue since the central government's move to privatise its operations. The BJP's allegations put the ball squarely in the state government's court, demanding immediate action to secure the airport's future.
