The Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) has achieved a historic victory in the Bahiyal seat of the Gandhinagar district panchayat, a constituency with an overwhelming Muslim majority. This marks the first time the BJP has won this seat, which had been a Congress stronghold since independence. The result has sent shockwaves through the Congress party, whose members are struggling to comprehend the loss.
Election Details and Voter Turnout
Out of 7,700 registered voters in Bahiyal, 6,059 cast their ballots in the district panchayat elections. The Congress candidate lost by a narrow margin of 111 votes. In contrast, the Congress candidate for the taluka panchayat of Dehgam, which includes Bahiyal, won by a comfortable margin of over 1,500 votes. This disparity has left party workers baffled.
Former taluka panchayat member Mushtaq Chauhan expressed his surprise, stating, "This is a mystery for us. Congress could never have lost this seat. Our candidate in the taluka panchayat won by a margin of over 1,500 votes, but we lost in the district panchayat by 111 votes. It is quite surprising."
Background of Communal Tensions
Bahiyal witnessed its first communal unrest in September 2025, when violence erupted over social media posts. Stone-pelting was reported during a garba event, prompting the state home minister, Harsh Sanghavi, to visit the town and assure swift police action. More than 60 people, most of them Muslims, were detained. In October, authorities demolished 186 shops owned by members of the minority community.
While Chauhan claimed that the riots and subsequent bulldozer action had no impact on the election, Bahiyal native Junaid Qazi disagreed. He said, "Those who were detained after the riots, and many more who are still fearing indictment, were under pressure to support the ruling party."
The BJP's victory in this Muslim-majority seat is seen as a significant political development, highlighting shifting voter dynamics in the region. The Congress party is now analyzing the factors that led to this unexpected defeat, while the BJP celebrates its breakthrough in a traditionally opposition bastion.
