The Bharatiya Janata Party achieved a significant victory in the Himachal Pradesh municipal corporation elections, winning three out of four civic bodies that went to the polls. According to results announced on Sunday, the BJP gained control of Mandi, Dharamshala, and Solan, while the Congress managed to retain Palampur.
Detailed Seat Breakdown
In Dharamshala, the BJP won 11 of the 17 seats, the Congress secured five, and an independent candidate took one seat. In Solan, the BJP won 10 seats, the Congress took six, and an independent won one. In Palampur, the Congress secured a comfortable majority by winning 11 of the 15 seats, leaving just four for the BJP. In Mandi, the BJP won 12 of the 14 wards that went to the polls. The Congress managed to win only the Nela ward, where Narvada Devi registered a victory. In the Khaliyar ward, Congress rebel Alaknanda Handa, contesting as an independent, defeated senior BJP leader and former district president Ranvir Singh. Elections in Mandi were held in only 14 of the 15 wards, as voters in ward 14 boycotted the process.
Political Reactions
Former chief minister and leader of opposition Jai Ram Thakur termed the results a mandate against the Congress government. "People have sent a clear and loud message that the Congress government has no place left in the state," Thakur said. He also claimed that the momentum extended to rural areas, stating that 75 percent of BJP-backed candidates won in the recent panchayat elections.
Chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu dismissed the BJP's claim, asserting that the overall mandate remained in favor of the ruling party. "The BJP should look at the bigger picture. The Congress has won more seats across urban local bodies, including municipal councils, than the BJP. In the panchayati raj elections as well, around 2,400 Congress-backed pradhans and 2,300 up-pradhans won. This is a historic victory for us and reflects the faith reposed by the people of Himachal Pradesh in the Congress," Sukhu told the media in Shimla. The chief minister downplayed the BJP's victories in Mandi and Dharamshala municipal corporations, attributing them to the influence of local BJP leaders rather than the party's state leadership. "The BJP's victories are largely due to the proactive role played by leaders like Anil Sharma in Mandi and Sudhir Sharma in Dharamshala, and not because of Jai Ram Thakur," he said. When asked whether the Congress would introspect over its performance in the municipal corporation elections, Sukhu said, "Congress has not fared badly. We got a good mandate. We will identify the areas where our candidates were weak."
However, BJP's Dharamshala MLA Sudhir Sharma said the victory reflected public anger against the state government led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. Sharma alleged the government had failed to address the concerns of employees, youth, women, and the trading community. BJP state president Rajeev Bindal said in a statement that the election results reflected widespread public dissatisfaction with the Congress government, as it has allegedly failed to fulfill its promises to women, youth, farmers, and employees. Describing the election outcome as a "historic mandate" in favor of the BJP, Bindal said the results signaled growing support for the party and reflected people's faith in the leadership and policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Voter Turnout and Historical Context
The four municipal corporations saw an overall voter turnout of 63.65 percent in the elections held on May 17. Of the 131,369 eligible voters, 83,342 cast their ballots. Palampur recorded the highest polling percentage, while Solan saw the lowest. In the 2021 municipal corporation elections under a BJP state government, the Congress had won majorities in Solan and Palampur, while the BJP secured only Mandi and a plurality in Dharamshala.
