BJP Worker Allegedly Assaulted During Election Campaign in Ahmedabad

A 57-year-old driver and long-time political worker has filed a formal police complaint in Ahmedabad, alleging he was physically assaulted and threatened during a local body election campaign. The incident occurred in the Shaherkotda area, highlighting tensions during election outreach activities.

Details of the Alleged Assault

The complainant, Dhiraj Rathod, a resident of Buddhanagar Society near Naroda Road, stated in his complaint that he has been associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for over three decades. According to police records, Rathod was conducting campaign activities with fellow workers Navin Rathod, Kanchan Solanki, Mahesh Rathod, Harish Solanki, and Pinakin Rathod in the Indira Nagar ward.

After completing their outreach in Laxmipura chawl, the group proceeded to Ashok Mill's new chawl for further campaigning. At the entrance of the chawl, a resident identified as Hasmukh Vora, also known as Kalu Gulabi, allegedly objected to their presence and demanded they leave immediately.

When Rathod explained they would finish their scheduled outreach before departing, Vora reportedly began verbally abusing him. The situation escalated when Vora allegedly grabbed Rathod by the collar, engaged in a physical scuffle, and slapped him multiple times, causing him to fall to the ground. Other workers present intervened to separate the two individuals.

Threats and Police Intervention

Following the physical altercation, the accused allegedly issued explicit threats, warning the BJP workers against returning to the area for any future campaigning activities. The complainant and his associates immediately approached the Shaherkotda police station to report the incident.

A formal complaint has been lodged with authorities, who are now investigating the allegations of assault and criminal intimidation. The case underscores the sometimes volatile nature of election campaigning at the local level, where personal and political tensions can intersect dramatically.

Background and Context

Local body elections in Gujarat often see intense campaigning as political parties vie for influence at the municipal level. The alleged assault on a veteran BJP worker during such activities raises questions about campaign safety and political decorum.

Police officials confirmed they have received the complaint and are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident. No arrests have been made at this preliminary stage of the investigation.

The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by political workers during election seasons, where door-to-door campaigning can sometimes lead to confrontations with residents who hold opposing political views or simply object to campaign activities in their immediate vicinity.
