A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker was shot in West Bengal's Basirhat area on Thursday following a dispute over putting up party flags. The incident occurred in the Basirhat area of North 24 Parganas district, triggering a political row between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the opposition BJP.
Details of the Incident
The victim, identified as 32-year-old Rana Ghosh, was allegedly attacked by a group of miscreants while he was putting up BJP flags in his locality. According to reports, the assailants objected to the flags and an argument ensued, which quickly escalated into violence. The attackers opened fire, injuring Ghosh in the leg. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where his condition is stated to be stable.
Local BJP leaders have alleged that the attackers were TMC supporters, accusing the ruling party of orchestrating political violence. BJP's North 24 Parganas district president, Subrata Chakraborty, condemned the attack and demanded strict action against the perpetrators. "This is a clear case of political vendetta. Our worker was merely exercising his democratic right to put up party flags. The TMC is trying to suppress dissent through violence," he said.
Political Reactions
The BJP has called for a protest and demanded an impartial investigation. Party workers staged a demonstration outside the local police station, alleging that the police were not taking the matter seriously. Senior BJP leaders have also reached out to the state administration, urging them to ensure the safety of party workers.
On the other hand, the TMC has denied any involvement in the incident. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, "The BJP is trying to create a false narrative to gain political mileage. We do not condone violence in any form. The matter should be investigated thoroughly, and the guilty should be punished, irrespective of their political affiliation."
Background of Political Violence in West Bengal
West Bengal has a history of political violence, especially during election seasons. The state has witnessed several clashes between workers of the TMC and BJP, often leading to injuries and even deaths. The recent incident adds to the growing list of violent confrontations, raising concerns about the law and order situation in the state.
The police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Preliminary reports suggest that the attackers have been identified, and efforts are on to arrest them. However, the BJP remains skeptical, accusing the police of bias.
This incident comes ahead of the upcoming panchayat elections in the state, which are often marred by violence. Political parties have been accused of using muscle power to influence voters and intimidate opponents. The attack on the BJP worker has further heightened tensions, with both parties trading charges.
