BJP Workers Storm Kolkata Police Station in Dramatic Protest

In a dramatic escalation of political tensions, more than 300 workers from the BJP Yuva Morcha broke through barricades and gatecrashed the Girish Park police station in north Kolkata on Monday afternoon. The protesters attempted to forcibly take away nine men who had been arrested for allegedly attacking state minister Shashi Panja and a group of policemen on Saturday.

Violent Clashes and Breach of Police Security

The incident unfolded as BJP workers gathered outside the police station, leading to violent clashes with police personnel. Protesters managed to breach three separate barricades set up for security. Several individuals broke the locks and attempted to enter the main premises of the police station before being stopped by an additional team of officers who were rushed to the scene.

"All nine are karyakartas of our party. The violence and brick-batting were instigated by Trinamool supporters, followers of local MLA and minister Shashi Panja, to prevent our men from attending Modi's rally," a senior BJP leader alleged during the confrontation.

Political Allegations and Demands

BJP councillor Meena Devi Purohit from Ward 22 stated, "They wrongfully arrested our workers. We are demanding their immediate release. They must arrest the actual culprits linked to Trinamool." The protest highlighted the deepening political rift between the BJP and Trinamool Congress in West Bengal.

According to police sources, Monday's Yuva Morcha rally began at Vivekananda Road and moved toward the police station without obtaining prior permission. "The programme did not include any protest in front of the police station," a police officer revealed, suggesting the demonstration was spontaneous.

Police Response and Election Preparedness

Kolkata Police commissioner Ajay Kumar Nand described the Girish Park incident as "extremely unfortunate" and confirmed that police action was underway. He reaffirmed the force's readiness for the upcoming elections, emphasizing their commitment to fairness and impartiality.

"People have a lot of expectation from police that we will perform our duty with fairness and impartiality. Meeting those expectations is the real challenge for the police, and we will have to fulfil it," Commissioner Nand stated, addressing concerns about law enforcement during the election period.

Background: Saturday's Violent Incident

The confrontation stems from a violent incident on Saturday afternoon that continued for nearly an hour on one of Kolkata's major arterial roads. At least six police officers, including the Bowbazar Officer-in-Charge, and multiple supporters from both Trinamool and BJP were injured in the mayhem.

Minister Shashi Panja, who was herself injured during the Saturday incident, took shelter inside her home as her aides and some police officers bolted the door from inside and barricaded themselves for protection.

Legal Proceedings and FIRs Registered

Police have registered three separate First Information Reports (FIRs) related to the Saturday violence:

  1. One suo motu case filed by police
  2. One case lodged by Trinamool Congress
  3. One case filed by BJP

All nine arrested individuals were produced before the Bankshall court and have been remanded to police custody until March 19. The legal proceedings continue as both political parties maintain their respective versions of events leading to the arrests and subsequent protest.
