BJP Yuva Morcha Leader Found Dead in Tripura After By-Election

Agartala: Rahul Kishore Roy, the president of the BJP Yuva Morcha in North Tripura district and a municipal councillor, was found dead in his home bathroom in Dharmanagar on Tuesday morning, just hours after the BJP secured victory in the Dharmanagar by-election.

Police have described the circumstances surrounding the death as suspicious. The body was recovered and later handed over to the family following a post-mortem examination for last rites.

Chief Minister Orders Investigation

Chief Minister Manik Saha expressed condolences over Roy's death and directed the police to conduct a thorough investigation. He assured that a comprehensive, fair, and unbiased inquiry would be carried out, and appropriate legal action would be taken based on the findings.

Family Alleges Threats and Internal Party Tensions

Family members alleged that Roy had received threats from other BJP leaders and claimed that the pressure led him to take his own life. Supporters staged protests, demanding the arrest of those who had allegedly threatened Roy. The unrest escalated into an attack on Roy's residence later that night.

Police reported that a saffron scarf was found tied around Roy's neck, raising questions about whether it was a suicide or an act of foul play.

Wife's Accusations and Alleged Assault Attempt

Roy's wife accused certain BJP youth leaders of attempting to assault her husband at their home. She stated that the group came twice on Monday—once in the afternoon and again late at night—and allegedly tried to break in, but the family kept the doors locked. Reports suggest that the alleged attackers accused Roy of working against the BJP candidate Jahar Chakraborty during the by-election, pointing to internal party tensions.

The death occurred on the night celebrations were held in Dharmanagar for the by-election victory. There were also allegations that Roy and others, acting at the behest of former Dharmanagar BJP MLA late Biswa Bandhu Sen, were involved in corruption and a syndicate that sidelined party members and damaged the BJP's image.
