About Majuli Constituency
Majuli is Assam's largest river island and an assembly constituency in Jorhat district, reserved for Scheduled Tribes. It is celebrated for its unique Vaishnavite Satra culture and vulnerability to erosion from the Brahmaputra River. Bhuban Gam of the BJP is the current MLA, elected in the 2022 by-election after Sarbananda Sonowal resigned for the Rajya Sabha. In the 2022 by-election, Bhuban Gam won with 67,242 votes (69.86% share), defeating AJP's Chittaranjan Basumatary (25,101 votes, 26.08%) by 42,141 votes.
Erosion threatens the island's landmass, displacing communities and Satras despite protective measures like geo-bags. Flooding, connectivity via ferries, and preserving indigenous Mishing culture amid tourism growth are priorities. Infrastructure lags, including roads and power, while youth seek non-agricultural jobs.
