BJP's Nepotism Pledge Contradicted by AMC Election Candidate List

The Bharatiya Janata Party had made a firm commitment that nepotism would have no role in selecting candidates for the upcoming Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections. However, this promise appears to be contradicted by the reality on the ground, as more than half a dozen candidates with direct family connections to former councillors or former MLAs have entered the electoral fray.

Last-Minute Nominations Reveal Family Connections

These politically connected candidates came to light on the final day for filing nominations, which was Saturday. The nominations reveal a pattern of family members stepping into political roles previously held by their relatives, raising significant questions about the party's selection process.

From the Khadia ward, the BJP has nominated Pareshkumar Lalji Anand, who is the son of former mayor Lalji Parmar. Lalji Parmar served as the mayor of Ahmedabad from 1997 to 1998, establishing a political legacy that now extends to his son.

Additionally, Hetal Umang Nayak, the wife of Umang Nayak who served as a councillor from 2021 to 2026, has been fielded as a BJP candidate from the same Khadia ward.

Multiple Wards Feature Relatives of Former Officials

In the Paldi ward, BJP has nominated Kranti Maulik Ashok Bhatt, also known as Kranti Koumil Gandhi, who is the niece of former MLA Bhushan Bhatt. This nomination continues the trend of family members entering politics through established connections.

From the Kubernagar ward, BJP has put forward Umedsing Yadav, whose mother Kala Yadav was a former councillor. This represents another instance where political lineage appears to play a significant role in candidate selection.

In the Ramol-Hathijan ward, Maulik Patel has been nominated again by BJP. He is the son of former councillor Atul Patel, continuing a family tradition in municipal politics.

Succession Through Byelection

A particularly notable case involves the Isanpur ward. Gautam Patel was elected as a BJP councillor in the 2021 elections, but following his demise, a byelection was held. In that byelection, his son Maulik received the party ticket and successfully won the seat, demonstrating how political positions can sometimes become family inheritances.

Congress Also Fields Relative of Former Councillor

While the BJP faces the majority of scrutiny for these nominations, the Congress party has also engaged in similar practices. Zulfi Khan Pathan is contesting as a Congress candidate from the Gomtipur ward. He is the son of former councillor Taufiq Khan Pathan, indicating that political nepotism is not confined to a single party in the AMC elections.

The prevalence of these family connections in candidate nominations raises important questions about political transparency and meritocracy in municipal elections. Despite public commitments to avoid nepotism, both major parties appear to be relying on established political families to field candidates, potentially limiting opportunities for new entrants without such connections.
