BJP's Pulok Gohain Wins Tinsukia Seat by 48,497 Votes

NEW DELHI: Pulok Gohain of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious in the election for the Tinsukia assembly constituency in Assam, securing a total of 85,184 votes. He defeated Congress candidate Devid Phukan by a decisive margin of 48,497 votes. The victory marks a significant achievement for the BJP as the party continues to consolidate its position in the state.

Election Results 2026: Key Developments

In the broader context of the 2026 elections, several other parties also made headlines. Vijay's TVK party emerged as a formidable force in Tamil Nadu, reshaping the political landscape. Meanwhile, in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lagged behind Suvendu Adhikari after the second round of counting in Bhabanipur. The TVK managed to push both the DMK and AIADMK to the margins, while the BJP appeared poised to oust Mamata in Bengal and retain Assam.

In Assam's Tinsukia constituency, the face-off between BJP's Pulok Gohain and Congress leader Devid Phukan was a closely watched contest. As attention turned to the likely outcome, exit polls released by multiple agencies suggested that the BJP-led government is poised to secure a comfortable majority in the state. Such a result would enable Himanta Biswa Sarma to continue serving as the chief minister.

High Voter Turnout in Assam

Polling for all 126 constituencies was held on April 9, with the state registering a voter turnout of over 85 per cent, one of the highest levels seen in recent times. The strong turnout was evident across both rural and urban regions, pointing to a broad and enthusiastic participation by voters. This high engagement reflects the importance of the elections for the people of Assam.

Tinsukia is an assembly constituency in Assam's Tinsukia district, part of the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha area. It blends urban commerce, tea estates, and a diverse population. Sanjoy Kishan of the BJP was the current MLA, having won in 2021 and previously in 2016. In 2021, he secured 85,857 votes (66 per cent share), defeating Shamsher Singh of Assam Jatiya Parishad (15,060 votes, 12 per cent) by a landslide margin of 70,797 votes.

Development Challenges and Priorities

Urban-rural infrastructure gaps, including roads, flooding from nearby rivers, and traffic congestion in this commercial hub, challenge development despite the BJP's dominance. Tea industry employment, youth job creation, and balancing industrial growth with welfare for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) communities are key priorities for the region. Voter turnout hit 75.5 per cent in 2021, reflecting high engagement amid anti-CAA sentiments in the past.
