BJP's Vishal Shirale Secures Key Position in Kolhapur Municipal Corporation
In a significant political development, Vishal Kiran Shirale of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been elected as the standing committee chairman of the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC). The election took place during a special meeting held on Wednesday at the Chhatrapati Tararani Assembly Hall, with additional district collector Sanjay Shinde presiding as the returning officer.
Committee Elections Yield Mixed Results for Major Parties
The standing committee election was not the only appointment decided during the proceedings. In parallel developments, Shiv Sena corporator Satyajit Jadhav was elected as the transport committee chairman. Furthermore, the women and child welfare committee saw Kausar Bagwan from Shiv Sena elected as chairperson, while Deepa Ajit Thanekar of the BJP secured the vice-chairperson position.
The proceedings were officially attended by KMC commissioner K. Manjulekshmi and additional commissioner Ravikant Adsul, ensuring proper administrative oversight of the electoral process.
Detailed Voting Breakdown Reveals Close Contests
The 16-member standing committee comprises 7 corporators from Congress, 5 from BJP, 3 from Shiv Sena, and 1 from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). In the final tally, Shirale representing Ward 7A secured 9 votes, defeating Congress candidate Amar Samarth who received 7 votes.
In the transport committee election involving 12 members, Satyajit Jadhav from Ward 11A won with 8 votes against Congress candidate Durvas Kadam who secured 5 votes. The women and child welfare committee election saw Kausar Ismail Bagwan from Ward 18B defeat Congress's Jayashri Kamble by a narrow margin of 5-4 votes. For the vice-chairperson position, Deepa Thanekar of Ward 7B secured 5 votes against Aruna Gawali's 4.
Shirale Outlines Vision for KMC's Financial Independence
Following his electoral victory, newly elected standing committee chairman Vishal Shirale emphasized his commitment to improving the municipal corporation's fiscal health. "As the standing committee chairman, my priority will be to make the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation financially independent," Shirale declared. "In the coming days, the public will witness a significant strengthening of the KMC's financial condition through strategic planning and efficient resource management."
Congress Challenges Transport Committee Election Results
The elections were not without controversy, as Congress group leader Indrajit Bondre has formally demanded that the transport committee election be nullified and a fresh process conducted. Bondre cites alleged violations of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act as grounds for his objection.
According to Bondre's complaint, newly elected standing committee chairman Vishal Shirale participated in the hand-vote for the transport committee chairman despite not being a member of that specific committee. "A total of 12 transport committee members were present along with Shirale," Bondre stated. "During the voting process, Shirale also raised his hand to vote. Our candidate, Durvas Kadam, immediately objected, arguing that a non-member has no legal right to vote in this specific election. However, the objection was ignored and the vote was improperly counted."
Legal Grounds for Challenge Cited by Congress Leader
Bondre specifically referenced Section 25(2) of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, which clearly stipulates that only the 12 designated members of the transport committee are eligible to participate in the election of its chairman. "The law is unequivocally clear on this matter," Bondre emphasized. "The standing committee chairman does not possess voting rights in this particular election. We will pursue appropriate legal action if this irregular selection is not formally cancelled and a proper re-election conducted."
The controversy adds a layer of complexity to what would otherwise be routine municipal committee elections, potentially setting the stage for legal proceedings that could impact the legitimacy of the transport committee leadership appointment.
