BJP Re-Inducts Rebel Harish Alimchandani in Akola, Sparks Internal Unease Before Civic Polls
BJP's strategic U-turn: Rebel leader returns to party in Akola

In a dramatic political move just days before the Akola Municipal Corporation elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has re-inducted rebel leader Harish Alimchandani, triggering visible discomfort and strategic recalibration within its local ranks in Maharashtra.

A Strategic Homecoming Amidst Resentment

The decision to welcome back Alimchandani, who had been suspended for anti-party activities, is being projected by the state leadership as a step to consolidate the organization ahead of the crucial civic polls. However, the move has reopened old wounds and exposed persistent internal fault lines.

During the official induction program, the unease was palpable. BJP chief whip in the Maharashtra Assembly and Akola MLA, Randhir Savarkar, appeared visibly uncomfortable. The absence of several senior local leaders, including former mayor Vijay Agrawal, spoke volumes about the simmering resentment. While MLA Randhir Savarkar and MP Anup Dhotre were present, many party office-bearers maintained a noticeable distance, reflecting the underlying discord.

The Ghost of the 2024 Assembly Defeat

The root of the current tension lies in the 2024 Assembly elections. Harish Alimchandani, defying the party, contested as an Independent from the Akola West constituency with the support of the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA). He secured a significant 21,000-plus votes, a performance that proved decisive in the defeat of the BJP's official candidate, Vijay Agrawal.

Agrawal lost the election by a narrow margin of 1,283 votes, with many party workers squarely blaming Alimchandani's rebellion for the loss. Following the polls, the BJP had suspended Alimchandani and several others for anti-party activities. Many workers in the Akola West constituency, who had campaigned extensively for Agrawal, reportedly remain upset, viewing the reinstatement as a betrayal of their efforts.

A Calculated Gamble to Neutralize a Threat

The party's U-turn is a clear pre-emptive strike driven by electoral pragmatism. Sources indicate that Alimchandani and his associates were in advanced stages of floating a third front to challenge the BJP directly in the municipal elections. Unwilling to risk further division of votes, the BJP's central leadership reportedly conveyed a clear directive to the Akola unit to ensure the return of all rebels and consolidate the Hindu vote bank.

"I feel like I am returning home. The senior and local leaders have overlooked my mistakes and given me another opportunity to work for the BJP. I am grateful to them," Alimchandani stated after his induction, striking a conciliatory note.

Whether this political gamble will strengthen the BJP's prospects or deepen its internal divisions is the central question now. The party has chosen to prioritize immediate electoral calculus over internal harmony. This decision has undoubtedly added a fresh layer of intrigue to Akola's dynamic political landscape, setting the stage for a high-stakes civic battle where internal unity will be as crucial as the fight against external opponents.
