In a significant development for Karnataka's political landscape, state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president B.Y. Vijayendra on Saturday articulated the party's flexible stance regarding electoral alliances, even for upcoming local body polls. His comments came as a clarification following his earlier assertion that the BJP should aim to secure power independently.
Clarifying the Stand on Alliance Politics
Vijayendra addressed the media, explaining that his previous statement about the BJP coming to power on its own strength was a reflection of the deep-seated aspirations of the party's grassroots workers. He emphasized that the sentiment was born from the party's consistent performance in recent elections, where it had narrowly missed achieving a clear majority by a margin of just 5 to 10 seats on multiple occasions.
This clarification was prompted by a statement from Janata Dal (Secular) supremo and former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda on Friday. Gowda had indicated that his party would not enter into an alliance with the BJP specifically for the local body elections. Responding to this, Vijayendra expressed respect for the senior leader, acknowledging his stature.

"We respect him and acknowledge his role as a senior leader," Vijayendra stated regarding Deve Gowda. He sought to dispel any notion of confusion within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), reminding everyone that the JD(S) had joined the coalition with the explicit purpose of strengthening Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership at the centre.
Stressing the BJP's disciplined organizational structure, Vijayendra unequivocally stated the state unit's commitment to following the directives of the party's central leadership. "We will abide by whatever decision the high command takes on the alliance. If the leadership decides on an alliance even for local body elections, we will stand by it," he affirmed.
