BMC Intensifies Property Tax Recovery Drive with Major Enforcement Actions
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a significant crackdown on property tax defaulters across Mumbai, implementing stringent measures to recover outstanding dues. In a major enforcement action, the civic body has carried out attachment proceedings against 6,922 properties with accumulated property tax arrears totaling a staggering Rs 6,089 crore.
Seizure Actions and Immediate Tax Payments
Alongside the attachment actions, the BMC has taken seizure measures against 483 properties belonging to persistent defaulters. The enforcement drive has yielded immediate results, with 2,888 property owners promptly paying their outstanding taxes amounting to over Rs 784 crore as soon as the seizure actions commenced.
As of the latest reports on Tuesday, the BMC has successfully collected Rs 6,024 crore in property tax dues, representing an impressive 82.1% of the total outstanding amount. This substantial recovery highlights the effectiveness of the corporation's intensified collection efforts.
Targeted Action Against Commercial Properties
The enforcement measures have specifically targeted commercial properties with significant outstanding dues. In one notable case, seizure action was carried out against six units in the Hallmark commercial building located at Government Colony in Bandra. Remarkably, three of these unit holders immediately paid up their outstanding dues totaling over Rs 2 crore once the crackdown began.
Proposed Auction of Properties
In a further escalation of recovery efforts, the BMC has proposed the auction of 210 properties belonging to chronic defaulters. This move represents the corporation's determination to utilize all available legal avenues to ensure property tax compliance and recover public funds.
The comprehensive enforcement strategy demonstrates the BMC's commitment to improving tax collection efficiency and ensuring that all property owners fulfill their civic financial obligations. The substantial recovery of outstanding dues will contribute significantly to municipal resources for infrastructure development and public services across Mumbai.
