Bomb Explosion at Congress Leader's Residence in Manipur Sparks Security Concerns

In a disturbing incident early Wednesday morning, unidentified miscreants detonated a bomb at the gate of a state Congress leader's residence in Imphal East, Manipur. The explosion occurred at the home of Toijam Lokendro, chairman of the labour department of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee, located in Kongpal Ningthoubung. While the blast caused significant damage to the gate, fortunately, no injuries were reported. Police and forensic teams swiftly arrived at the scene to conduct investigations, but as of now, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Congress Leader Condemns the Attack

Congress leader Keisham Meghachandra strongly condemned the bombing, describing it as a shocking breach of security in what is considered a high-security zone. In a post on X, he expressed grave concerns, stating, "This shocking incident in a civilian area within a high security zone raises serious questions about the law and order situation in Imphal. The culprits must be arrested immediately, and the govt must ensure the safety and security of both public leaders and civilians without delay." His remarks underscore the growing anxiety over the fragile security environment in the region.

Ethnic Tensions and Disarmament Disputes

Meanwhile, the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) has criticized the Kamjong district administration's directive for licensed arms holders to surrender their firearms. The TNL labeled the move as "ill-timed" and "dangerously disconnected from ground realities," arguing that civilians in Kamjong live in constant fear of illegal Kuki militants. They warned that disarming law-abiding citizens without adequate safety measures leaves them exposed to immediate risks, highlighting the complex ethnic dynamics at play.

Security Operations in Ukhrul District

In a related development, security forces in Ukhrul district destroyed bunkers at Lengiangching and Mongkot Chepu villages. This action followed multiple firing incidents between rival Kuki and Tangkhul Naga groups over two days, which resulted in three people being injured. Police reported recovering cartridges during the raids. The crackdown is part of ongoing efforts to address weeks of sporadic gunfire around Litan Sareikhong, where clashes in February had previously torched over 30 houses.

Authorities stated that the operations rendered "bulk of the bunkers on both sides ineffective," leading to a sharp reduction in firing. Area domination has been established through increased patrolling and troop deployment, aiming to restore stability in the volatile region.
