BRS Leaders Detained While Attempting to Visit Farmers in Telangana Land Dispute

Hyderabad witnessed significant political tension on Tuesday morning as former ministers T Harish Rao, P Sabita Indra Reddy, and Errabelli Dayakar Rao were taken into preventive custody. The leaders were proceeding to meet farmers in Parigi, where land parcels are proposed to be acquired for industrial purposes, when police intercepted them at Appa Junction on the outskirts of the city.

Detention and Release of Opposition Figures

The detained BRS leaders were transported to the Shamshabad police station, where they were held for several hours before being released in the afternoon. This incident has sparked a major controversy, with the opposition Bharatiya Rashtra Samithi (BRS) accusing the ruling Congress government of suppressing democratic dissent and targeting political opponents.

Speaking to media representatives at the Shamshabad police station, BRS deputy floor leader Harish Rao launched a scathing attack on the administration. He characterized the detention of leaders attempting to visit and reassure farmers as "nothing short of political high-handedness." Rao described the current government as a "regime of barricades, handcuffs, and repression," asserting that "police rule is prevailing in the state."

Allegations Against the Congress Government

Harish Rao leveled serious allegations against the Congress administration, claiming it is seizing fertile agricultural land for industrial development. He emphasized that the government is specifically targeting land where farmers cultivate two or three crops annually, which is now being proposed for industrial conversion. The BRS leader demanded the immediate withdrawal of the land acquisition notification and made it clear that his party would not retreat until the notification is formally canceled.

"Democracy is being murdered in Telangana," Rao declared, reminding the public that Congress had previously promised "democracy" as part of its so-called seventh guarantee. He accused the ruling party of now attacking opposition groups and suppressing dissent through forceful measures.

Broader Political Context and Criticism

Rao further criticized the state of democratic values under Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy's leadership, stating that Telangana is witnessing a collapse of fundamental democratic principles. He highlighted that while BRS was recently suspended from the assembly for raising public issues, the government has now escalated its tactics by preventing opposition leaders from even meeting with affected farmers.

"This is not healthy for democracy," Rao asserted. "A government that fears questions from the opposition and fears the pain of farmers has no moral legitimacy. We are only trying to stand with the farmers and give them confidence. But this government is trying to silence even that voice."

Accusations of Failed Governance

The BRS leader expanded his criticism beyond the land acquisition issue, alleging that the Congress government has comprehensively failed various segments of society. According to Rao, the administration has let down farmers, women, students, the elderly, and every section of society. He claimed that the public is now fully aware of the substantial gap between Congress's election promises and its actual governance performance.

This incident underscores the escalating tensions between the ruling Congress and opposition BRS in Telangana, particularly concerning agricultural and land use policies. The detention of senior political figures while attempting to engage with farmers has raised questions about political freedoms and the government's approach to dissent in the state.
