The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) has decided to take matters into its own hands for the city's iconic floral event. After failing to secure any private sponsorship for the upcoming 54th edition of the Rose Festival, the civic body has allocated an estimated budget of Rs 1 crore to organise the event itself in February 2026.
Festival Plans and Sub-Committees Formed
Despite floating an Expression of Interest (EoI), the MC did not receive any response from agencies or companies willing to sponsor the popular festival. This lack of private participation has prompted the corporation to constitute several sub-committees. These committees will be responsible for managing the various activities and competitions planned for the festival.
Among the thirteen proposed events is a crowd-favourite attraction: a joy helicopter ride. The full proposal detailing the budget and plans will be presented for approval in the general house meeting scheduled for December 30.
Major Civic Projects on the Agenda
The Rose Festival is not the only significant item on the MC's agenda. The December 30 meeting will also deliberate on several other crucial infrastructure and service upgrades for the city.
Modernisation of the Industrial Area Abattoir
A major project involves the comprehensive upgrade of the Multispecies Abattoir in Industrial Area Phase-1. Established in the year 2000, the slaughterhouse requires modernisation to meet the latest standards set by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
A consultant has submitted a Detailed Project Report (DPR) that estimates the cost of this upgrade at a substantial Rs 48 crore. This investment will cover extensive civil works, the installation of modern equipment, and the construction of a new effluent treatment plant to manage waste responsibly.
Expansion of Raipur Kalan Gaushala
In another important initiative for animal welfare, the MC has proposed the expansion of the Raipur Kalan Gaushala. The plan involves constructing additional sheds at the facility at an estimated cost of Rs 14 crore. This expansion aims to provide better shelter and care for the animals housed there.
Formalising Waste Collection in Commercial Areas
To streamline sanitation services, the Municipal Corporation plans to regularise door-to-door waste collection in commercial zones. The strategy involves signing formal Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with commercial establishments. This move is designed to bring informal waste collectors into a structured framework, ensuring efficient and accountable service.
Draft terms for these agreements have already been finalised and will be placed before the general house for final approval.
Aim for Streamlined Civic Services
Municipal officials have stated that this suite of proposals, from the cultural festival to infrastructure projects, is part of a broader effort to streamline civic services and ensure the timely execution of essential projects. The decisions taken in the upcoming house meeting will set the course for significant developments in Chandigarh's urban management and public amenities in the coming years.
