Chennai's Major Infrastructure Boost: CM Stalin Inaugurates 96 Crore Railway Overbridge
In a significant development for Chennai's infrastructure, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Thursday inaugurated a newly constructed railway overbridge at the 2B-level crossing on Korukkupet–Manali Road. This crucial project, built at a substantial cost of 96 crore rupees, marks a pivotal step in alleviating long-standing traffic congestion in the northern parts of the city.
Details of the Inaugurated 2B Railway Overbridge
The newly opened 2B railway overbridge spans an impressive 840 meters in total length, which includes a 72-meter main span. It features a width of 8.4 meters, complemented by 5-meter-wide service roads on both sides. Chief Minister Stalin personally traveled on the bridge during the inauguration ceremony, highlighting its operational readiness.
This infrastructure addresses a critical issue that had persisted for nearly four decades. Previously, around 42,000 vehicles were halted daily at the 2A and 2B railway level crossings due to frequent train movements. These interruptions caused extensive delays for motorists and heavy vehicles, severely impacting daily commutes and logistics.
The completion of the 2B overbridge is expected to bring substantial relief to approximately 1 lakh residents across several neighborhoods, including Kodungaiyur, Korukkupet, Tondiarpet, Ezhil Nagar, Kannadasan Nagar, and Nehru Nagar.
Foundation Laid for New 75 Crore Overbridge on Ennore High Road
In addition to the inauguration, Chief Minister Stalin laid the foundation stone for a new railway overbridge at the 2A railway crossing on Ennore High Road in Korukkupet. This project is estimated to cost 75 crore rupees and represents another major investment in Chennai's urban mobility.
The proposed 2A railway overbridge will be 448 meters long, with a 39.4-meter section dedicated to the railway portion. It will have a wider carriageway of 11 meters, along with 5-meter-wide service roads equipped with footpaths for pedestrian safety.
The bridge's alignment will begin approximately 30 meters after the Power House junction and conclude at the IOCL junction. Once constructed, it is projected to benefit around 1 lakh people in the surrounding areas, further decongesting traffic and improving connectivity.
New Park Development Announced Near Manali Road Bridge
Beyond the transportation projects, the Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone for a new public park to be developed near the Manali Road bridge. This green space will cover an area of 19,128 square feet and is budgeted at 1.1 crore rupees.
The park is designed to enhance the local community's quality of life with features such as:
- Extensive greenery and landscaping
- A dedicated walking track for fitness enthusiasts
- Comfortable seating arrangements for visitors
- Modern lighting facilities for evening use
These initiatives collectively underscore the Tamil Nadu government's commitment to upgrading Chennai's infrastructure, addressing historical demands, and improving the daily lives of its citizens through strategic urban development projects.
