Chennai's Chepauk-Triplicane Constituency Braces for Intense Three-Way Electoral Battle
As the assembly elections approach, the Chepauk-Triplicane constituency in Chennai is poised for a heated three-way contest, despite the presence of star candidate and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin from the DMK. With a predominantly middle-class and educated voter base, the DMK expresses confidence in securing an unchallenged victory for its high-profile nominee.
Historical Dominance and Electoral Trends
This election marks the fourth contest since the constituency was established in 2008 following delimitation, and it is the second time Udhayanidhi Stalin is in the fray. Historically, the DMK has maintained a stronghold here, with J Anbazhagan winning in 2011 and 2016 by margins of approximately 14,000 and 10,000 votes, respectively.
Udhayanidhi's entry has further solidified DMK's position, as evidenced by his decisive victory in 2021 with a margin exceeding 69,000 votes. While current indicators suggest another win for him, the retention of this substantial victory margin remains uncertain amid evolving political dynamics.
Opposition Candidates and Local Sentiments
On the rival front, the AIADMK has nominated Adhirajaram, who previously lost to Chief Minister M K Stalin in the 2021 Kolathur constituency election. Other contenders include Ayisha Begum from NTK and D Selvam from TVK, both relatively lesser-known figures in the political arena.
The constituency, with a significant Muslim population, has long been a DMK bastion. This loyalty was notably demonstrated in the 2011 assembly election, when the party secured Chepauk-Triplicane even as it was voted out of power across much of the state. "Muslims here will remain loyal to the DMK due to their implementation of numerous welfare schemes for our community. Given the current political landscape, with the BJP governing many northern states, the DMK is the only party we can trust," stated Abdul Rabb, a resident of Surappa Street within the constituency.
Persistent Local Challenges
Despite the DMK's popularity, several longstanding issues continue to plague the area. The constituency suffers from a severe lack of parking facilities and ongoing cattle menace. Triplicane, one of Chennai's oldest neighborhoods annexed by the British in 1668, features narrow streets that contribute to frequent traffic congestion, even during non-peak hours.
"The surge in motorcycle numbers has exacerbated parking problems, with vehicles often occupying main roads and causing traffic jams. Implementing multilevel parking spaces could offer a viable solution," remarked M Khaja Moideen, a street vendor on Pycrofts Road in Triplicane.
Additionally, the cattle menace is particularly acute near the Parthasarathy temple, a local landmark. "Although a cattle shelter was constructed, owners are reluctant to tether their animals there," explained A Lakshmi, a flower seller in front of the temple.
Campaign Confidence and Future Prospects
Nevertheless, DMK campaigners remain optimistic about Udhayanidhi Stalin's prospects, citing his frequent visits to the constituency during natural calamities and his efforts to address long-pending issues. They believe these actions will resonate with voters, making victory a straightforward achievement in this closely watched electoral battle.
