Chennai's Ganapathipuram Crematorium Faces Years of Neglect and Infrastructure Deficiencies
The Ganapathipuram crematorium, situated near the 200ft Radial Road in Chennai, has languished in a state of neglect for several years, with residents and local associations raising serious concerns about its poor maintenance and lack of essential infrastructure. The facility, which handles at least ten cremations monthly, suffers from inadequate amenities and unfulfilled modernization promises by the Tambaram Corporation.
Critical Infrastructure Shortfalls and Operational Challenges
During a recent visit, the premises were found locked with no security personnel present, allowing residents to dump garbage by climbing over a small steel gate. Overgrown bushes indicated a lack of regular maintenance by corporation workers. The only washroom on-site was in a dilapidated and unusable condition, highlighting the severe neglect.
The crematorium operates with just one platform, relying solely on traditional firewood for cremations. Unlike many other facilities within Tambaram Corporation limits, it lacks modern gasifier or electric systems, despite announcements over the past five years promising upgrades to gasifier technology that have yet to materialize.
Resident Complaints and Official Responses
M Karthik Raja, a resident of Chromepet, expressed frustration, stating, "Corporation officials have never visited the crematorium in the past five years. They claim it does not fall under their jurisdiction." This sentiment is echoed by M Gandhi, president of the Pallavaram resident welfare association, who highlighted broader issues: "Many crematoria in Pallavaram and Chromepet are not monitored or inspected by officials. Anti-social elements exploit them for illegal activities. We urgently need surveillance cameras and night patrolling."
A senior corporation official acknowledged the delays, attributing them to funding constraints. However, a detailed project report (DPR) has now been prepared. The official confirmed plans to restore facilities and install gasifiers at an estimated cost of 3 crore rupees, aiming to address long-standing deficiencies.
Broader Context of Crematorium Management in Tambaram
Tambaram Corporation oversees approximately 60 crematoria within its limits, with 25 maintained by non-governmental organizations. Last year, the corporation increased burial and cremation charges by 500 rupees, setting current rates at 5,000 and 3,000 rupees respectively. This fee hike has not translated into improved services at the Ganapathipuram site, where infrastructure remains substandard.
The ongoing neglect at Ganapathipuram crematorium underscores systemic issues in public facility management, with residents calling for immediate action to ensure dignity in final rites and prevent misuse of the premises.
