The proposal to rename Clement Town cantonment, one of Dehradun's oldest settlements, as 'Shaurya Nagar' has been forwarded to the Union Defence Ministry after receiving clearance from the cantonment board, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
Board Clearance and Next Steps
The cantonment board, a non-elected body headed by a serving brigadier, includes the chief executive officer and a nominated member. An official stated that the proposal has been sent to the Central Command headquarters in Lucknow, with the final decision resting with the Defence Ministry.
Broader Trend of Renaming
This move is part of a larger trend to rename cantonment areas to highlight military heritage and national pride. It follows a similar proposal to rename the hill cantonment of Lansdowne as 'Jaswant Garh', which has sparked political and public debate in Uttarakhand over issues of identity, legacy, and economic impact.
Clement Town's History and Significance
Established during the British era as a military settlement, Clement Town remains governed under the Cantonments Act, 2006. It houses numerous defence establishments, training centres, and retired personnel. Over time, it has evolved into a key residential and commercial hub in Dehradun, with a large population of ex-servicemen.
Mixed Reactions from Residents
The renaming plan has drawn mixed reactions. Mahesh Pandey, patron of the Clement Town Resident Welfare Society, supported the proposal, stating that 'Shaurya Nagar' resonates with the locality's character, where over 60% of residents are ex-servicemen. He argued that the change would honour the contributions of armed forces personnel.
However, some residents questioned the necessity. Trader Prakash Singh Bisht emphasised that civic issues should take precedence over symbolic changes. The debate reflects differing priorities among stakeholders.
The proposal comes amid ongoing discussions about renaming colonial-era landmarks to reflect Indian heritage, with the Defence Ministry expected to make a final decision after reviewing the proposal.
