CM Unveils Statue of Senior MLA Shamanur Shivashankarappa

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah led a major tribute event for the late senior Congress leader and MLA, Shamanur Shivashankarappa, in Davanagere on Friday. The ceremony saw the unveiling of a statue in honor of the veteran politician, who passed away at the age of 95.

Political Leaders and Seers Pay Homage

The event attracted a significant gathering, including political figures from various parties, seers from multiple religious institutions, and a large number of citizens. The attendance highlighted the widespread respect Shivashankarappa commanded beyond political affiliations.

In his address, CM Siddaramaiah described the demise of Shivashankarappa, the country's oldest legislator, as a tremendous loss for both Karnataka and the Congress party. He noted that the leader lived a remarkably long life and was widely believed to have reached nearly 100 years of age.

Remembering a Life of Service and Unity

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar reflected on the impermanence of life, stating that what endures after death is one's legacy. He praised Shivashankarappa for being remembered as "useful"—a great virtue. Shivakumar recalled his long association with the leader, highlighting that Shivashankarappa, despite his wealth, possessed a generous heart and left behind enduring ideals. His tenure until 95 set a record as a serving member of the legislative assembly.

Former Chief Minister and MP Jagadish Shettar remembered Shivashankarappa's dedication to social causes. He pointed out that the leader channeled his business success for societal benefit and worked extensively on socially oriented projects. Shettar particularly emphasized his role in fostering unity, stating, "He fostered marital relations between the Veerashaiva-Lingayat sub-sects." As president of the Veerashaiva Lingayat Mahasabha, he strengthened the organization and his firm stance that Veerashaivas and Lingayats are one helped prevent social division.

A Chapter in Value-Based Politics Ends

Legislative Assembly Speaker UT Khader offered a poignant perspective, remarking that Shivashankarappa's passing signified not just a personal loss but the conclusion of an era in value-based politics in the state.

Former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa shared a personal bond, referring to Shivashankarappa as his elder brother and acknowledging the support he received from people across party lines.

Adding to the calls for recognition, Prasanna Renuka Veera Someshwar Swamiji, the pontiff of Rambhapuri Balehonnur Peeta, urged the state government to posthumously confer the 'Karnataka Ratna' award on Shivashankarappa for his immense contributions to the state's progress.

The event was attended by a host of other dignitaries, including MP Basavaraj Bommai, ministers MB Patil, HK Patil, RB Timmapur, SS Mallikarjun, MP Prabha Mallikarjun, along with several MLAs and MLCs, underscoring the collective homage to the departed leader's legacy.
