Coimbatore Corporation Unveils Deficit Budget for 2026-27 with Strategic Focus on Education and Public Amenities
The Coimbatore Corporation on Monday presented a deficit budget for the financial year 2026-2027, projecting a shortfall of Rs 126.21 crore. This budget reflects a scenario where planned expenditures are set to exceed anticipated revenues, necessitating fiscal reforms to bridge the gap effectively.
Budgetary Figures and Fiscal Trends
The projected receipts, encompassing both revenue and capital components, are estimated at Rs 4,915.5 crore. In contrast, the total expenditure, including revenue and capital outlays, is projected to reach Rs 5,041.71 crore. This results in a deficit of Rs 126.21 crore, which marks a reduction of Rs 13.62 crore compared to the 2025-26 budget deficit of Rs 139.83 crore.
In the current financial year, the budget was presented with a deficit of Rs 139.83 crore, with expected receipts of Rs 4,757.16 crore and expenditure of Rs 4,617.33 crore. The slight improvement in the deficit for 2026-27 indicates ongoing efforts to manage fiscal challenges while prioritizing key development areas.
Major Allocations in Education and Parks
The 2026-27 budget has placed a strong emphasis on enhancing education and recreational facilities. A significant allocation of Rs 10 crore has been proposed for establishing common dining areas in corporation schools, aimed at improving student welfare and nutrition.
Furthermore, Rs 10 crore has been earmarked for the renovation of 100-year-old school buildings, ensuring that historic educational infrastructures are preserved and modernized for contemporary learning needs.
In a move to promote sports, the budget allocated Rs 60 lakh for forming a cricket team and providing training to interested students from five corporation higher secondary schools. This initiative seeks to nurture athletic talent at the grassroots level.
The corporation had commenced 59 new kindergarten sections in the current financial year, and the proposed budget allocates Rs 10 crore for creating play areas and procuring play materials for students in these sections, fostering early childhood development.
Healthcare and Senior Citizen Initiatives
To bolster healthcare services, the corporation has proposed creating two more dialysis centers at Saravanampatti and Singanallur, with each center costing Rs 4 crore. This expansion aims to improve access to critical medical treatments for residents.
Additionally, plans have been announced to create recreational centers for senior citizens in two locations, with each center costing Rs 4 crore. These facilities are designed to provide social and leisure opportunities for the elderly, enhancing their quality of life.
Parks and Road Safety Projects
The corporation also plans to conduct an annual flower show at Semmozhi Park, promoting horticulture and community engagement. Moreover, a road safety park is proposed to be established on the premises at a cost of Rs 4 crore, in collaboration with non-governmental organizations.
Corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran highlighted the significance of the road safety park, stating, "The proposed road safety park model was recommended by a Supreme Court judge who visited the district recently. The model will be the first of its kind in India with virtual and interactive road safety learning methods for children." This innovative project aims to educate young citizens about road safety through engaging and interactive means.
