Coimbatore South Nomination Controversy: DMK's Senthil Balaji's Papers Accepted Despite Rival Objections

In a significant development in the Coimbatore South constituency, the returning officer has officially accepted the nomination papers of DMK candidate V Senthil Balaji. This decision came despite multiple objections raised by rival political candidates during the scrutiny process, sparking controversy and allegations of procedural irregularities.

AIADMK Raises Concerns Over Affidavit Signature

AIADMK candidate Amman K Arjunan lodged a formal objection regarding the signature on Senthil Balaji's affidavit. Arjunan pointed out that the affidavit was dated April 4 and bore the signature of a notary based in Karur. However, according to Arjunan's claim, Senthil Balaji was actively campaigning in Coimbatore on that specific day.

"As per the established rules, a notary must verify documents in the physical presence of the candidate," Arjunan asserted. "This discrepancy raises serious questions about the authenticity of the affidavit submission process."

NTK Candidate Questions Independent Candidates from Karur

Adding to the controversy, Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) candidate V Perarivalan raised suspicions about the unusually high number of independent candidates from Karur district filing nomination papers specifically in the Coimbatore South constituency.

"Isn't it highly suspicious that eighteen individuals from Karur district are contesting exclusively in Coimbatore South and not in any other constituencies?" Perarivalan questioned. "Why are they not contesting in neighboring areas like Kavundampalayam or Thondamuthur?"

Perarivalan elaborated on his concerns, explaining that each independent candidate is legally permitted to deploy at least two individuals at every polling booth. "If all eighteen candidates are strategically working in coordination, they could deploy thirty-six additional personnel across polling stations," he calculated. "This could potentially create an uneven playing field and facilitate vote manipulation tactics."

AIADMK Alleges Financial Advantage

AIADMK members further escalated their allegations by pointing to the financial implications of multiple independent candidates. According to election regulations, each candidate is permitted expenditure of up to Rs 40 lakh before the election.

"If all eighteen independent candidates from Karur are covertly supporting the DMK campaign, this creates a substantial financial advantage," an AIADMK representative stated. "The combined permissible expenditure could reach Rs 7.2 crore, potentially facilitating widespread cash distribution or gift-giving activities that would be difficult to monitor effectively."

Official Response and Nomination Statistics

Despite these objections, official sources confirmed that the nominations of all eighteen candidates from Karur district have been accepted by the returning officer. "Any eligible individual has the constitutional right to contest from any constituency of their choice," an official explained. "The mere fact that multiple candidates hail from the same geographical location does not constitute valid grounds for rejection under election laws."

The official further clarified that all submitted affidavits were thoroughly examined and found to be compliant with requirements. "Each affidavit was clean, clear, and met all necessary criteria," the source confirmed. "While valid objections would certainly have been considered, none of the raised concerns met the threshold for disqualification under the existing electoral framework."

As of Monday, the Coimbatore South constituency has recorded a total of sixty-one nomination filings. Among these, more than twenty-two candidates are contesting as independents, indicating a highly competitive electoral landscape in this key Tamil Nadu constituency.
