Congress Files Complaint Against BJP-Backed Mayoral Candidate Over Alleged MCC Breach
A delegation from the Congress party has formally accused Roshni Khalko, the BJP-backed mayoral candidate in Ranchi, of violating the model code of conduct (MCC). The complaint was submitted to the State Election Commission (SEC) on Monday, urging immediate action against Khalko for alleged electoral misconduct.
Allegations of Biscuit Distribution with Candidate's Image
In a detailed memorandum to the SEC, the Congress party claimed that Khalko, along with her election workers and BJP supporters in the state capital, has been distributing biscuit packets to voters. These packets reportedly feature Khalko's image prominently printed on them. Notably, a packet of biscuits has been officially allotted as Khalko's election symbol for the upcoming February 23 polls to the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC).
The memorandum stated: "These packets have the candidate's picture printed on them. Furthermore, at the location where the biscuit packets were being packed, a flex banner featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also been installed. This constitutes a clear violation of the model code of conduct."
Congress Accuses BJP of Using PM Modi's Image Out of Desperation
The Congress delegation further alleged that the BJP is strategically using Prime Minister Modi's face in their campaign materials out of desperation and fear of losing the election. They argued that distributing food packets with photographs during the election period is a deliberate attempt to influence voters unfairly.
The complaint emphasized: "Distributing food packets with photos during the election period is an attempt to influence voters. Moreover, video footage of this packaging and distribution process has been shared from the official Facebook handle of the BJP, amplifying the violation."
The Congress has demanded an impartial and thorough probe into the matter to ensure electoral integrity.
Khalko's Response: Denial and Confidence in Public Support
In response to the allegations, Roshni Khalko firmly rejected the claims made by the Congress party. She stated, "I do not know what they are saying against me or my party. I do not need to distribute biscuits as people are accepting me open-heartedly due to my personal connect and pro-people approach."
Khalko expressed confidence in her campaign, suggesting that her grassroots engagement and voter rapport are sufficient to secure support without resorting to such tactics.
Background and Implications
The controversy arises just ahead of the crucial February 23 elections for the Ranchi Municipal Corporation. The model code of conduct is designed to ensure a level playing field and prevent any undue influence on voters. Violations can lead to penalties, including disqualification or other disciplinary actions by the election authorities.
This incident highlights the intense political rivalry in Ranchi, with both major parties closely monitoring each other's campaign activities. The State Election Commission's response to this complaint will be closely watched, as it could set a precedent for handling similar allegations in future municipal elections across the state.
