In a significant political move, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, under the leadership of its president Gaurav Gogoi, organized a vibrant Samvidhan Diwas rally in Nagaon on Wednesday. The event saw strong participation from party members and the public, turning into a platform for vehement criticism against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state.
Rally for Constitutional Awareness
The rally, which featured a Samvidhan Diwas padyatra with the national flag, was conducted in collaboration with the Seva Dal. Several senior Congress leaders, including MP Pradyut Bordoloi, MP Rakibul Hussain, and MLA Sibamani Borah, actively participated, underscoring the party's collective stance. Gogoi, addressing the gathering, stated that the primary objective was to raise public awareness about the Indian Constitution. He emphasized that the Constitution is not merely a legal document but a living inspiration, especially at a time when democratic institutions are perceived to be under attack.
Allegations of Democratic Erosion and Voter Manipulation
Gogoi launched a sharp critique against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the BJP, accusing them of systematically undermining democracy and attempting to establish a "monarchy in Assam". He alleged that there is a complete breakdown of law and order and that democracy has ceased to exist under the BJP's rule. The Congress leader expressed grave concern over the actions of the Election Commission, which he claimed appear to be "designed to help the BJP form governments through vote manipulation".
In a serious accusation, Gogoi further claimed that the Chief Minister, in a bid to maintain power, is attempting to bring BJP voters from states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh and illegally enroll their names in Assam's voter list ahead of the next assembly elections. This, he argued, directly threatens the rights of the indigenous people and the six ethnic groups of Assam, whose future, he asserted, should be determined solely by the Assamese people.

The Constitution Day was observed by the Congress party across various districts in Assam, signaling a coordinated effort to highlight these issues. The Nagaon rally served as a focal point for this state-wide campaign. By positioning themselves as the "defenders of the Constitution", the Assam Congress aims to galvanize public opinion against the incumbent government, setting the stage for a heated political battle in the run-up to the state elections.
