Congress Extends Support to Uddhav Thackeray for Maharashtra Legislative Council Election

In a significant political development, Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardan Sapkal declared on Friday that his party would back Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray if he chooses to contest the upcoming legislative council polls. This announcement comes as the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance prepares for elections to nine council seats scheduled for May 12.

Political Calculations and Alliance Dynamics

Based on the current strength of political alliances in the state legislature, eight of the nine council seats are expected to be secured by the BJP-led Mahayuti coalition, leaving one seat for the opposition MVA alliance. The possibility of Thackeray contesting this single available seat has been circulating within political circles, prompting Sapkal to travel to Delhi for consultations with senior Congress leaders.

"Uddhav Thackeray represents the face of our MVA alliance, and the Congress party will unequivocally support his candidature should he decide to enter the electoral fray," stated Sapkal. "However, this decision must be finalized through collective deliberation among senior MVA members regarding the allocation of this crucial seat."

Shiv Sena (UBT) Perspective and Internal Congress Dissent

Echoing the need for consensus, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut suggested that Thackeray's potential candidacy could lead to an unopposed election. "According to my assessment, if former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray becomes a candidate once more, this election could proceed without opposition," Raut remarked. "The MVA alliance, particularly our Shiv Sena (UBT) faction, will determine our official stance within the next one to two days."

Political analysts interpret Raut's statements as clear indications that Thackeray is being seriously considered as the MVA candidate for the legislative council elections. However, this potential move has sparked disagreement within Congress ranks, where some members oppose supporting Thackeray's candidacy.

These dissenting voices argue that Congress should assert its claim to the sole available council seat, especially after recently sacrificing a Rajya Sabha seat to alliance partner NCP (SP) during the previous election cycle. They contend that conceding another significant position to an alliance partner could further weaken Congress's political standing within Maharashtra.

Recent Precedents and Future Negotiations

The Rajya Sabha election provides important context for current discussions, as the MVA alliance previously utilized its collective strength to ensure the election of NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar. This historical concession now influences the ongoing debate about council seat allocation.

Addressing internal disagreements, Sapkal emphasized the necessity for comprehensive discussions within Congress regarding both immediate and long-term electoral strategies. "Our party must engage in thorough deliberations concerning present and future elections to reach a unified position," he explained. "Similarly, we will need to conduct detailed negotiations with our MVA partners to finalize our approach for the legislative council polls."

As Maharashtra's political landscape continues to evolve, the coming days will prove crucial in determining whether Uddhav Thackeray will contest the legislative council election with Congress support, or whether internal alliance dynamics will lead to an alternative candidate emerging from the MVA coalition.
