Congress Bypoll Decision Ignites NCP (SP) Strategy Discussions in Pune
The political landscape in Pune has been set abuzz following the Congress party's decisive move to contest both the upcoming Baramati and Rahuri assembly bypolls. This strategic announcement has immediately triggered a flurry of activity within the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar), with senior members convening for urgent internal discussions to finalize their candidate for the crucial Rahuri seat.
Baramati Campaign Intensifies as Nomination Deadline Looms
In Baramati, the political epicenter of this development, Jay Pawar, the younger son of the late Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, has taken a prominent role. He has stepped forward to actively steer the campaign for his mother, Sunetra Pawar, who is set to file her nomination papers on Monday, marking the final day for submissions. The atmosphere is charged as the deadline approaches, with all eyes on this high-stakes constituency.
Amidst this fervor, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis made a significant appeal on Saturday. He called upon the Congress and other political parties to demonstrate a large-hearted approach by allowing Sunetra Pawar to be elected unopposed. "If Sunetra vahini wins the election unopposed, it will be in keeping with Maharashtra's political tradition," Fadnavis stated, referencing past uncontested bypolls in the state, including one following the death of RR Patil where the BJP did not field a candidate.
Congress Stands Firm Despite Appeal
Despite the Chief Minister's public plea, the Congress party has maintained its resolute stance. State Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal confirmed on Saturday that the party has completed the process of interviewing aspirants and is likely to announce its candidates for both Baramati and Rahuri on Sunday. This firm decision underscores the party's commitment to contesting these seats, setting the stage for a potential electoral battle.
In response, Jay Pawar, who was recently inducted into the NCP's apex committee, reviewed the party's preparedness for a contest in Baramati. Speaking emotionally in Baramati, he expressed that he had never imagined an election in the constituency without his father, Ajit Pawar. "We have to face the bypoll in extremely unfortunate circumstances. I thank every person in Baramati for supporting us," he said, highlighting the personal and political significance of this election.
Regarding Congress's decision to contest Baramati, Jay indicated that NCP seniors would hold talks with the Congress leadership. However, he clarified that even if Congress chooses to proceed, the NCP would not object, suggesting a pragmatic approach amidst the political maneuvering.
NCP (SP) Deliberations Intensify Over Rahuri Seat
As Congress moves forward with its preparations, senior NCP (SP) members have significantly intensified their deliberations over the Rahuri seat. The party has already announced that it will not contest the Baramati bypoll, focusing its efforts instead on Rahuri. In a key development, the party's former state chief minister, Jayant Patil, visited Sharad Pawar at his Mumbai residence on Saturday to discuss the candidate selection issue.
According to informed party sources, former MLA Prajakt Tanpure, who won the Rahuri seat in the 2019 elections, is emerging as the frontrunner for the party's nomination. Another round of high-level discussions is scheduled in Mumbai on Sunday, indicating the urgency and importance of this decision for the NCP (SP)'s political strategy.
Jay Pawar Advocates for Family Unity and Demands Justice
In a separate but related development, Jay Pawar emphasized the importance of unity within the Pawar family during his interactions with reporters in Baramati. "I am too junior to comment on the merger issue. Senior members of the party will take that call. I, however, strongly feel that the Pawar family should remain united. After Ajit dada's demise, the entire family stood together, and we continue to remain united even today," he stated, addressing ongoing speculations about political mergers and family cohesion.
Furthermore, Jay raised critical questions regarding the investigation into the plane crash that tragically took his father's life. He demanded the arrest of the owners of VSR Ventures, the company that operated the aircraft. "If a building collapses, the owner is arrested. If a restaurant catches fire, its owner is held responsible. Then why has no action been taken against the owner of the company that operated the aircraft?" he questioned, highlighting his concerns over accountability.
He added that while he had planned to address a press conference on this issue, several points he intended to raise were already highlighted by Rohit Pawar. Consequently, he has decided to wait until the final report on the plane crash is submitted, indicating a measured approach to seeking justice.
The political dynamics in Pune are clearly evolving rapidly, with the Congress's bypoll decisions acting as a catalyst for strategic recalibrations across party lines. As nomination deadlines approach and internal discussions continue, all stakeholders are closely watching the unfolding developments in Baramati and Rahuri, which are set to shape Maharashtra's political narrative in the coming weeks.
