Congress and BJP Leaders Engage in Heated Exchanges Ahead of Karnataka Bypolls

Campaigning for the Davanagere South and Bagalkot assembly bypolls escalated dramatically on Monday, with senior Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) functionaries launching fierce attacks over dynastic politics, governance, and community mobilisation. With only two days remaining until the polls, the political rhetoric reached a new intensity, highlighting deep-seated tensions between the two major parties in Karnataka.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi Accuses Congress of Monopolising Power

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi launched a scathing critique against the Congress party, accusing it of monopolising political power in Davanagere South through a single family. "First the grandfather served as MLA and minister, then the son became MLA and minister, while his wife was elected as MP, and now the grandson has been given a ticket to become MLA," Joshi stated. He argued that this concentration of power poses a significant threat to democratic principles, drawing parallels to the Gandhi family's dominance at the national level.

Joshi further alleged that "ill-gotten wealth was being used to influence elections" and criticised Congress's governance record. He pointed to mismanagement in schemes such as Anna Bhagya, contrasting it with the Union government's handling of fuel and LPG supplies. Despite global disruptions, Joshi asserted that domestic reserves remain adequate, showcasing the BJP's effective administration.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah Fires Back at BJP and RSS Alignments

In a robust response, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah targeted the BJP's moral standing, highlighting instances where former critics of the party and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) have now aligned with them. "Those who joined BJP did so to preserve political relevance. On what moral basis can they criticise Congress?" he questioned, making a pointed reference to figures like Chalavadi Narayanaswamy.

Siddaramaiah also addressed remarks by HD Kumaraswamy, who claimed that the Gowda family "did not practise dynastic politics" but were pushed into elections by public demand. The Chief Minister countered this by pointing to Kumaraswamy's son's electoral loss in Channapatna. "It's contradictory to claim popular support after being rejected by voters. Contesting elections is fine if people want it, but results speak for themselves," he emphasised, underscoring the importance of electoral outcomes over rhetoric.

Bagalkot Campaign Focuses on Community Neglect and Development

In Bagalkot, former Chief Minister and BJP MP Basavaraj Bommai accused the state government of neglecting Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC). "Without political power, justice cannot be achieved," he declared, citing incidents during Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti celebrations. Bommai urged voters to prioritise long-term development over temporary benefits, warning against selling votes for short-term gains.

BJP state president and MLA BY Vijayendra added to the criticism, stating that the bypolls represent a tough test for the Siddaramaiah-led government. Speaking in Davanagere, he argued that Siddaramaiah "had failed to deliver development despite 17 budgets" and criticised the government's portrayal of guarantee schemes as genuine progress. "Even minorities now see the party shedding crocodile tears," Vijayendra remarked, questioning the effectiveness of Congress's policies.

Key Issues Dominating the Bypoll Campaigns

The campaigning has brought several critical issues to the forefront:

  • Dynastic Politics: Accusations of family dominance in Davanagere South and comparisons to national-level political dynasties.
  • Governance Failures: Debates over scheme mismanagement, such as Anna Bhagya, versus claims of effective Union government handling of essential supplies.
  • Community Mobilisation: Concerns about neglect of SC, ST, and OBC communities in Bagalkot and calls for justice through political empowerment.
  • Electoral Integrity: Warnings against vote-selling and emphasis on long-term developmental goals over immediate benefits.

As the bypolls approach, these exchanges underscore the high stakes involved, with both parties vying to strengthen their positions in Karnataka's political landscape. The outcomes in Davanagere South and Bagalkot are poised to have significant implications for future state-level strategies and alliances.
