Congress Defends Landslide Rehabilitation Fund Amid Political Controversy in Wayanad
In a significant development amid ongoing disputes over the Congress party's rehabilitation efforts for landslide victims in Wayanad, KPCC president Sunny Joseph addressed the media in Kannur on Saturday. He provided a detailed breakdown of the funds collected and expenditures, aiming to counter allegations of misuse by political opponents.
Fund Collection and Expenditure Details
Joseph revealed that the Congress party has amassed a total of Rs 5.38 crore specifically for the house construction project intended for landslide victims. This amount includes a substantial contribution of Rs 1.05 crore from the Youth Congress, highlighting the party's grassroots support for the initiative.
However, expenditures have already surpassed the collected funds. Joseph stated that Rs 6.18 crore has been spent on purchasing 5.42 acres of land for the rehabilitation project. Additionally, Rs 9.3 lakh was allocated for developing a mobile application designed to facilitate public donations, underscoring the party's efforts to modernize fundraising.
Phased Land Acquisition and Financial Strategy
The land purchase was executed in two distinct phases. Initially, during the tenure of former KPCC president K Sudhakaran, 3.24 acres were acquired at a cost of Rs 3.68 crore. In the subsequent phase, 2.18 acres were purchased for Rs 2.5 crore, bringing the total expenditure to Rs 6.27 crore—exceeding the funds raised for the project.
To address this shortfall, Joseph announced that no further public fundraising will be conducted for the construction of the proposed houses. Instead, the remaining work will be financed through resources from the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and KPCC, ensuring the project's completion without additional public contributions.
Transparency and Denial of Misuse Allegations
Strongly refuting accusations of fund mismanagement, Joseph emphasized that all financial transactions have been conducted with full transparency. The funds are securely held in a joint account under the names of the KPCC president and the opposition leader, a measure intended to prevent any impropriety.
He accused the CPM of spreading baseless allegations to create suspicion and undermine the rehabilitation efforts. According to Joseph, this political maneuvering is part of a broader strategy to discredit the Congress party's humanitarian initiatives in the region.
Political Tensions and Land Disputes
The controversy has escalated into physical confrontations, with Joseph alleging that CPM workers attempted to encroach upon the land purchased by Congress by erecting huts. This act has further inflamed tensions between the two parties, highlighting the volatile political landscape in Wayanad.
Joseph also criticized the ruling party for organizing protest marches targeting the offices of Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi and Kalpetta MLA T Siddique. He described these actions as politically motivated attempts to divert attention from the substantive issues at hand and disrupt the rehabilitation process for landslide victims.
As the debate continues, the Congress party remains steadfast in its commitment to providing relief, while political rivalries threaten to overshadow the humanitarian goals of the project.
