Congress Sounds Alarm on Electoral Roll Irregularities in Bhopal
Amid the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bhopal, senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh issued a stern warning to election officials on Friday. Singh cautioned Booth Level Officers (BLOs), assistant returning officers, and returning officers to prepare electoral rolls with absolute honesty, emphasizing that the BJP would not protect them when the Congress party uncovers evidence of foul play.
High-Level Congress Meeting Addresses Electoral Concerns
The state Congress unit convened a significant meeting of the party's political affairs committee to discuss the ongoing SIR process. The gathering brought together prominent party leaders including AICC in-charge of state affairs Harish Choudhary, former CM Digvijaya Singh, PCC Chief Jitu Patwari, LOP Umang Singhar, former LOPs Ajay Singh and Dr Govind Singh, along with the party's SIR committee head Sajjan Singh Verma and other key members.
During the meeting, Congress leaders expressed serious concerns about the integrity of the electoral revision process and demanded immediate legal action against officials involved in questionable practices.
Congress Demands Criminal Proceedings Against Fraudulent Registrations
The Congress party has called for stringent measures against election officials who registered fake names in voter lists. Digvijaya Singh specifically questioned the BLOs responsible for fraudulent registrations in 2023 and 2025, demanding thorough investigations and criminal cases against those found guilty.
"In 2023 and 2025, who were the BLOs that registered these fake names? There should be an inquiry into it, and a criminal case should be registered," Singh asserted during the meeting.
The senior Congress leader also criticized the Election Commission for overburdening BLOs with excessive work within tight deadlines, stating that the current workload violates service rules. However, he maintained that where fake voters' names have surfaced, action must be taken against the responsible BLOs and returning officers.
In his appeal to election officials, Singh stated: "It is our prayer that you prepare electoral rolls honestly and not get influenced by anyone." This statement underscores the party's concern about potential external pressure on election officials and their commitment to ensuring transparent electoral processes.
The Congress party's strong stance comes as the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls continues across the region, with political parties closely monitoring the process for any irregularities that could affect future election outcomes.
