Congress Makes Sriperumbudur Seat a Non-Negotiable Demand in Tamil Nadu Alliance Negotiations
The Congress party has established a firm precondition as it begins seat-sharing discussions ahead of the upcoming elections: the Sriperumbudur constituency must be allocated to the party. Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K Selvaperunthagai emphasized this demand, stating, "That's where the temple of our leader is," referring to the memorial of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated in Sriperumbudur in 1991.
Historical and Emotional Significance of Sriperumbudur for Congress
Sriperumbudur, located approximately 40 kilometers from Chennai, holds profound historical and emotional significance for the Congress party. Following Rajiv Gandhi's tragic death, the constituency became a symbolic stronghold for the party's rank and file. Since 1991, Congress has contested the reserved segment seven times, securing victory on four occasions. Selvaperunthagai himself won the seat in 2021 and is now seeking re-election from here, underscoring the party's deep-rooted connection to the area.
Incumbent MLA Faces Voter Discontent Over Accessibility Issues
Despite this emotional bond, the electoral contest in Sriperumbudur appears challenging this time. Voters have expressed significant dissatisfaction with Selvaperunthagai's perceived absence from the constituency, particularly after he assumed the role of TNCC president in 2024. During visits by reporters, public sentiment against him was palpable in certain areas.
Residents like Sarangan G from Sarapancheri village voiced their concerns, saying, "He is not easily accessible. We could see him more on TV than in the constituency." This criticism was highlighted when villagers in Kottur questioned his absence during a visit on December 30 last year.
AIADMK Candidate Leverages Grassroots Presence and Development Record
In contrast, AIADMK candidate K Palani, a former MLA from the area, is capitalizing on his strong grassroots connections and accessibility. A native of Kundrathur in Sriperumbudur, Palani has been a familiar face to voters since 2016. He is emphasizing infrastructure development projects completed during the AIADMK regime prior to 2021, claiming, "Every village in Sriperumbudur got well-laid roads when Edappadiar (AIADMK general secretary) was the chief minister."
Selvaperunthagai's Campaign Focuses on Explaining Constraints
During his campaign, Selvaperunthagai has been compelled to dedicate substantial time addressing his limited presence in the constituency. He explained, "People expect their MLA to visit every village, but that is not possible. There are local bodies to take care of their basic needs while an MLA has other tasks. I am explaining this to the people wherever I go. They are slowly understanding."
Additional Challenge from TVK's Candidate
The Congress candidate also faces competition from the TVK party, which is banking on the popularity of actor Vijay. TVK has fielded K Thennarasu as its candidate, though both Congress and AIADMK dismiss him as a political novice unlikely to gain significant traction among voters.
The Sriperumbudur seat remains a critical battleground, blending historical legacy with contemporary political dynamics, as parties vie for voter support in this emotionally charged constituency.
