Congress Grapples With Sudhakaran's Ambition for Kannur Assembly Seat
The Congress party in Kerala is facing significant internal turmoil over the potential candidacy of former KPCC president K Sudhakaran for the Kannur assembly seat. Sources within the party reveal that Sudhakaran is strongly pushing to contest from this constituency, claiming overwhelming support from local party workers who are firmly behind his bid.
Sudhakaran's Emotional Appeal and Political Maneuvering
Sudhakaran has made his intentions clear through both private channels and public platforms. While discussions about candidate selection were ongoing, he suddenly returned home and posted an emotional message on Facebook that resonated deeply with his supporters. "Every leader in Kannur today is someone who grew up and worked by holding my hand. There is no Kannur that I do not know and no Kannur that does not know me. Others might be able to forget the paths we traversed, but for me, those are raw realities that I cannot forget even in death," Sudhakaran wrote in his heartfelt post.
This emotional appeal prompted local district leaders to visit his residence in a show of solidarity, demonstrating his continued influence in the region. Sudhakaran expects the party leadership to ultimately decide in his favor, though reports suggest the high command is planning to meet him in New Delhi to discuss the matter further.
Congress Leadership's Complex Calculations
The central leadership of Congress finds itself in a difficult position. On one hand, they acknowledge Sudhakaran's significant influence in Kannur district, where even recent decisions like the appointment of Sunny Joseph as KPCC chief were made with his blessing. On the other hand, party strategists fear that allowing Sudhakaran to contest could set a problematic precedent.
If Sudhakaran is permitted to contest the assembly seat, it would likely trigger more sitting Members of Parliament to seek assembly seats, creating a domino effect that could disrupt the party's electoral strategy. Furthermore, the party is concerned that even if an exception is made for Sudhakaran, it would eventually force an unnecessary byelection in the Kannur Lok Sabha constituency, which would require additional resources and political capital.
Alternative Solutions and Political Context
One alternative being considered by the central leadership is allowing Sudhakaran to hand-pick the candidate for Kannur, thereby maintaining his influence while avoiding the complications of his direct candidacy. This compromise would recognize his stature while keeping him in his current parliamentary position.
The political context adds another layer of complexity to this decision. Ramachandran Kadannappally, who has been the incumbent MLA since 2016, is almost certain to be the LDF candidate for the seat. Congress believes they have a genuine opportunity to wrest the seat from the LDF this time, making candidate selection particularly crucial.
Official Statements and Party Unity
Despite the apparent tensions, senior Congress leaders have publicly downplayed any internal conflicts. Opposition leader V D Satheesan told reporters in Kochi that there were no issues related to candidate selection within Congress and refuted reports of differences with Sudhakaran. He emphasized that the party would announce its candidates within 24 hours after the election is formally declared or after the LDF announces its candidates.
Congress general secretary K C Venugopal addressed the broader issue of MPs seeking assembly seats, noting that some party MPs from Kerala have expressed interest in contesting the upcoming assembly elections. "I cannot term someone's wish to contest as 'a huge wrong,'" Venugopal stated, while clarifying that the final decision would rest with the party high command.
The situation remains fluid as Congress balances Sudhakaran's personal political ambitions with the party's broader electoral strategy and organizational discipline. The outcome will not only affect the Kannur constituency but could set important precedents for how the party manages similar situations in the future.
