Congress Expels Palakkad Councillor Over Sexual Assault Allegations

In a swift disciplinary move, the Congress party expelled Palakkad municipality councillor Prashobh C Valsan on Saturday following serious sexual assault allegations made by a woman from the Scheduled Tribe community. The action was taken by the Palakkad district congress committee (DCC) after the accusations came to light through media reports.

Allegations and Police Case

The survivor has filed formal complaints with both the local police and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. According to her complaint, Valsan, who represents the 24th division, sexually assaulted her multiple times under the false pretext of securing stable employment for her. She further alleged that he pressured her to terminate a pregnancy that resulted from the abuse.

Police registered a case at the Palakkad South police station on Saturday after recording the survivor's detailed statement. The case has been filed under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Authorities confirmed that Valsan is currently absconding, and efforts are underway to locate and apprehend him.

Party Response and Political Fallout

DCC president A Thankappan stated that the party took immediate disciplinary action upon learning of the allegations through media channels. While Valsan has been stripped of his party membership, his position as an elected councillor remains unchanged for now. "He may resign as councillor on moral grounds, but that is his decision," Thankappan noted, adding that the party is conducting an internal inquiry but has not received any formal complaint directly.

Thankappan dismissed concerns about political fallout for the upcoming elections, asserting that Valsan was not a high-profile leader within the party. However, the ruling LDF and opposition BJP have seized the opportunity to criticize Congress, alleging that the accused was a close associate of Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil.

Public Reactions and Calls for Justice

Congress candidate and actor Ramesh Pisharody publicly commented on the case, emphasizing that the woman deserves justice. "What happened to the woman was wrong and regrettable, and the accused should be punished," Pisharody stated, reflecting growing public concern over the allegations.

The case has drawn significant attention due to the serious nature of the accusations and the involvement of a Scheduled Tribe survivor, highlighting broader issues of accountability and protection for vulnerable communities. As the investigation progresses, all eyes remain on the legal proceedings and the party's handling of the internal inquiry.
